Celebrating Black History Month
During this month, we will be sharing information on important people and events from our History over the PA. This week we are highlighting the Underground Railroad. Here is an excerpt of one of our morning announcements read by our grade 3 students:
The Underground Railroad was a secret system to get escaping slaves north into Canada where slavery was not allowed and they could live in freedom. Resting and hiding spots were called Stations and included houses, barns, and gardens. Erchless Estate in downtown Oakville was a station where many slaves arrived by boat from Lake Ontario. You can see the door that the slaves called “The Freedom Door”.
Cultural Performance – Feb 11th
This Tuesday, February 11th, our primary division from JK to Grade 3 will enjoy a cultural performance by Emerita Emerencia as part of our Black History Month celebrations. Emerita will put on an endearing puppet show called The Mouse, The Ant and the Antelopes, which combines the stories The Town Mouse and Country Mouse, The Ant and the Butterfly, and a tale of African antelopes to honour African heritage and show how cultures and literature can blend to teach important lessons. The show focuses on humility and the value of sharing and respect. We are very excited to welcome Emerita and learn from the heritage and background of others. Our older students will experience another performance on March 10th.
