Black History Month at St. Teresa
Black History Month celebrations and activities are in full swing at St. Teresa! Read on to discover just a few of the things that are happening in our school.
Mrs. Mondello’s and Mrs. Malecki’s Kindergarten classes are ready to “BLAST-OFF” on a journey to discover more about Mae Jemison!
The Community Living Classroom
Students in the Community Living Classroom will experience Black History month through sensory activities. The activities, inspired by African Arts and Culture, will include exposure to music and crafts. The rich and meaningful colours of Ghanaian Kente Cloth will also be explored as Teachers and Educational Assistants work with students to create their own Kente Cloth craft.
Mrs. Martin’s Gr. 8 Class
The intermediates explored Alma Thomas who is an African American artist who is known for her colourful abstract paintings. We studied some of her works to find patterns, rhythms and her use of colour. Students were inspired to create their own pieces using the techniques Alma typically uses in her own paintings.
Mrs. La Joie’s Gr. 2 Class
Throughout the month of February, Mrs. LaJoie’s grade 2 students, will be using the inquiry process, to learn about several inspirational individuals. The class will do an inquiry together, highlighting, Willie O’Ree, the 1st Black hockey player. He is a proud Canadian, born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was inducted into the NHL, Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. Following our class inquiry, students will choose an inspiration individual they want to learn more about. So many amazing individuals…
Ms. De Sousa’s Gr. 6/7 Class
Students in Miss De Sousa’s Grade 6/7 classroom will experience Black History Month in an exploration of a variety of picture books and art pieces centred around important individuals throughout history. With the guidance of the text, “Beatitudes: From Slavery to Civil Rights” students will explore the faith connection as they create their own visual representation reflecting their understanding of the power of faith and history.

Grade 4s will be collecting clean, new/packaged adult socks until February 14th.
Dogman: The Musical
Gr. 2 and Gr. 3 students will travel to The Burlington Performing Arts Centre to watch Dogman: The Musical on Monday, February 10th.
Gr. 4 Liturgy
Our Gr. 4’s will lead a celebration on Wednesday, February 12th.
Special Parent Council Meeting
Parent Council welcomes ALL parents that would like to attend this special “HOOPLA” planning session to join them in the forum on Wednesday, February 12th at 6:30pm.
Valentine’s Day Dance
We will be holding our Valentine’s Day Dance on Thursday, February 13th.
Homework Club will take place on Thursday, February 13th from 3:00pm to 4:15pm for students in grade 3,4,5 and 6 who have registered and are not on a wait list.
Please note that schools will be closed this Friday, February 14th for a P.A. Day.
