Weekly Update: November 22nd-26th

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to a new week at St. Scholastica. You will notice that our Parent Weekly Update is a bit longer than usual this week. There are many exciting Advent and Christmas initiatives beginning!

Our staff is also looking forward to connecting with our parents and guardians during Parent-Teacher Interviews on Thursday evening and Friday!

Please refer to the information updates below:

COVID-19 HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATES FOR SCHOOLS

Below are some highlights from the recent announcement from Ontario’s Minister of Health and Minister of Education, as well as additional information from a memo from the Ministry of Education.

Updates for All Elementary and Secondary Schools:

  • Before the Christmas break, each student in Ontario will receive a Rapid Antigen Test home kit, which will contain five (5) tests for voluntary screening at home over the holidays.
  • As we did for the first two weeks of the school year, when we return to school in the new year, confirmation of daily screening of COVID-19 will be required for all students, staff and visitors during the first two (2) weeks.

Updates for Elementary Schools Only:

  • For the health and safety of our school communities, all parent-teacher interviews next week will take place in a virtual format. There will be no in-person interviews. You will be hearing from your child’s school with next steps if you had scheduled an in-person interview with your child’s teacher.
  • Beginning January 2022, all elementary school assemblies will take place in a virtual format ONLY
  • It is anticipated that on Friday, November 19th, Health Canada will be approving COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5-11 years old. More information will be shared with parents and guardians as it becomes available.

Winter Break Travel:

With the holiday season approaching, it is anticipated that many staff, students and families will choose to make travel plans over the break. We would like to remind families to follow federal directives related to international travel and quarantine requirements

Parents, please take note, that currently, if you are travelling outside of the country with unvaccinated children, that there is a 14 day period upon return where these unvaccinated children can not attend school or child care settings.  Please be sure to factor this into your travel considerations and plans.

HUMAN RIGHTS & EQUITY ADVISORY COUNCIL

Our HCDSB schools are committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming learning environments that support student achievement and well-being in our Catholic schools. Human Rights and Equity are guiding values that are consistent both with Catholic Social Teaching, reaffirming the dignity of every individual, as well as the Ontario Human Rights Code, which safeguards students and staff from discrimination based on the protected grounds.

The Board’s Equity and Inclusive Education Steering Committee is in the process of forming a Human Rights and Equity Advisory Council (HREAC) to engage community stakeholders including parents, students and community organizations.

The purpose of the HREAC is to assist in identifying community needs and to provide advice and guidance on addressing systemic barriers and supporting historically underserved members of the 2SLGBTQ+, racialized and Black communities in the HCDSB.

Parents/guardians and students in Grades 7-12 interested in serving on the HREAC are invited to submit an application online through the HREAC Membership Application Form.

ANGEL TREE

During the holidays, our goal is to brighten the holiday season by providing necessities and gifts to those who have been referred to this program.

This year, Halton Children’s Aid Society is asking for different forms of donations such as gift cards, items for Comfort Kits, and items for Life Start Kits.

SafeArrival REMINDER

Please note that all student absences must be reported using the SafeArrival System. An agenda note or Remind App message to teacher is not sufficient notification of student absence.

WINTER WEATHER

Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. All students should wear boots, hats, gloves or mittens, warm coats and scarves. All students will be going outside during the recess and lunch periods, except when the weather is extremely cold and we keep all students indoors (*See below). Playing outdoors is a pleasant and healthy activity when students are wearing suitable clothing.

With winter approaching all students should by now have a pair of “indoor shoes”. These extra shoes serve many functions, safety being the primary one. Students will be more comfortable when wearing dry shoes in the classroom and therefore more able to concentrate on academics.

Inclement Weather Procedure

Extreme Cold: Temperature with or without wind chill

a) warmer than -15°C: students may remain outside for all regular outside activities

b) between -15° and -20°C: students may remain outside for no longer than 20 minute intervals at a time

c) colder than -20°C: students must remain inside
