Dear St. Scholastica Families,
Wishing all of you a lovely weekend ahead. Here are the updates for this upcoming week at St. Scholastica:
SHROVE TUESDAY – DATE CHANGE TO MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH ,2020
A decision was made last week to move our Shrove Tuesday festivities to Monday, February 24th due to the proposed one-day strike action that OECTA had announced. Now that this one day strike (which was scheduled for Tuesday, February 25th) has been called off, we want to announce that we will still stay with the revised plan of offering our students a pancake treat on Monday, February 24th. Your Catholic School Council is to be thanked for the organization (and re-organization!) of this school wide pancake treat! All students in Grades K-8 will be invited down to the gym at a scheduled time to enjoy a pancake as a SNACK to recognize this day.
Shrove Tuesday has connections to our Catholic Faith Tradition. Shrove Tuesday is always on the last day before Lent begins. It is a day to FEAST before the penitence and fasting associated with our Lenten season begins. This pancake treat will not be breakfast or lunch, but will instead, serve as a morning or afternoon snack for our students. Once again – our students will enjoy this on Monday, February 24th, 2020.
The pancake mix that we are using is a peanut and tree nut free mix. If your child has another type of allergy or food sensitivity you are asked to please be in touch with your child’s teacher to discuss the options for your child on this day.
We thank the parents who have volunteered to assist our Catholic School Council on this day.
ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGY AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE ASHSES – Wednesday, February 26th at 1:45pm
This upcoming Wednesday, February 26th marks Ash Wednesday on the Catholic Liturgical Calendar (the Ordo). Ash Wednesday signifies the start of our Lenten season – 40 days filled with fasting, almsgiving and prayers as we lead to Christ’s death on the Cross on Good Friday and Resurrection on Easter Sunday. All parents and community members are invited to join our school for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy and Distribution of the Ashes on Wednesday, February 26th at 1:45pm in our Gymnasium. We welcome Father Jim Petrie from St. Benedict Parish for joining us on this day and thank our Grade 4 teachers and students for organizing this liturgy for us.
PINK SHIRT DAY – Wednesday February 26th , 2020
On February 26th we encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear a pink top or accessories with uniform bottoms to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying. As the Pink Shirt Day movement grows each year we see more and more people practicing kindness – both online and off – “Be the reason someone smiles today!”
