Dear St. Scholastica Families,
I hope that you are all enjoying a lovely Family Day weekend. We look forward to seeing all of the children back to school on Tuesday, February 18th. Here are the updates for this upcoming week at St. Scholastica:
PRIMARY STAFFING CHANGE
This is a notice to parents of children in Grade 1 and also for parents whose children are involved in the Primary Reading Intervention Program: Mrs. Warren, who teachers our Grade 1 (English only) students Science, Physical Education and Dance as well as leads our Reading Intervention Program with the Grade 2’s currently, has been, and will continue to be, off on a medical leave. We are thinking about her and wishing her a swift return. We welcome Miss Alessia Leone who will be filling in for Mrs. Warren until her return. Miss Leone will be starting to work with Mrs. Warren’s classes on Tuesday, February 18th.
ONTARIO ENGLISH CATHOLIC TEACHERS ASSOCATION (OECTA) LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE
Our school will be CLOSED to students on Friday, February 21st, 2020 as a result of the recent announcement by OECTA of a province-wide, one-day full withdrawal of services.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. For more information, please visit the Halton Catholic District School Board’s website: Labour Negotiations Update.
NEW UNIFORM PIECES AVAILABLE
In the Fall, your Catholic School Council voted to add more uniform pieces to our school uniform collection available at our approved uniform provider, ISW. Have a look at the attached flyer to see our new fleece hooded sweatshirt, athletic shorts for the warmer months and the knit cardigan option.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL PRIMARY MOVIE NIGHT – SAVE THE DATE!
Please see the attached flyer about our Primary Family Movie Night that our Catholic School Council is hosting on Thursday, March 5th . This item has been posted on School Cash Online for your purchasing needs. The due date for the purchase of tickets and food items is February 20th, 2020.
SHROVE TUESDAY – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2020
On Tuesday, February 25th, your Catholic School Council has organized a school wide pancake treat! All students in Grades K-8 will be invited down to the gym at a scheduled time to enjoy a pancake as a SNACK to recognize this day. PLEASE NOTE THAT GRADE 4 AND 5 STUDENTS WILL HAVE THEIR PANCAKE TREAT ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH AS THEY WILL BE ATTENDING THE TORONTO MUSIC AND DRAMA TRIP ON TUESDAY THE 25TH.
Shrove Tuesday has connections to our Catholic Faith Tradition. Shrove Tuesday is always on the last day before Lent begins. It is a day to FEAST before the penitence and fasting associated with our Lenten season begins. This pancake treat will not be breakfast or lunch, but will instead, serve as a morning or afternoon snack for our students.
The pancake mix that we are using is a peanut and tree nut free mix. If your child has another type of allergy or food sensitivity you are asked to please be in touch with your child’s teacher to discuss the options for your child on this day.
We thank the parents who have volunteered to assist our Catholic School Council on this day. We are still in DESPERATE need of electric griddles that can be borrowed on this day. If you have an electric (plug in) griddle that we can borrow for the 24th and 25th, please drop it off at the main office labelled with the family name by Friday, February 21st.
PINK SHIRT DAY – Wednesday February 26, 2020
On February 26 we encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear a pink top or accessories with uniform bottoms to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying. As the Pink Shirt Day movement grows each year we see more and more people practicing kindness – both online and off – “Be the reason someone smiles today!”

PROMOTING WELL BEING: List of Feeling Words from A to Z by Amanda Morin
Parents will often ask their kids to express themselves with words—”Use your words!” is a common playground refrain—but it’s not always easy for children. They are still exploring feelings and are sorely in need of emotional vocabulary to hang these feelings on. Helping our kids expand their emotional vocabulary not only aids them scholastically, but it also helps them better understand the subtlety of emotions and how words like “happy” and “elated” or “indifferent” and “disinterested” differ. By teaching our children the feeling words appropriate to their age—and encouraging them to use them when expressing themselves—we aid in their emotional growth now into their teen and adult years.
