Weekly Update – Jan. 6th – 10th

A Prayer for the New Year

Come, Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Risen Christ, be with us today and always. Be our Light, our Guide, and our Comforter. Be our Strength and our Courage. May this new year be a time of deep spiritual growth for us, a time of welcoming Your graces and gifts, a time for forgiving freely and unconditionally, and a time for growing in virtue and goodness.

Come, Holy Spirit, Be with us today and always, Amen.

Morning Procedures/ Supervision:

A gentle reminder that our morning supervision begins at 8:25 am. No students should be entering our playground or the school before this time. This is especially important on mornings where it is raining. There is not supervision for students arriving early. Please ensure your morning routine is established with drop off (or students walking/riding) occurring at or after this time. Thank you for your understanding.

Kiss and Ride – we want to thank you for your cooperation and following our rules when using the Kiss & Ride. Please remember to follow the flow (do not pass other cars) and only turn right out of the parking lot. Please click here to review reminders for using the Kiss & Ride safely. Once again, a big thank you to our many parent volunteers who generously offer their time each day.

Student Attendance – Every Day Matters! :

With the return back to school, it is a good time to continue with or begin new routines. When students arrive to school/class late, they are missing important messages, lessons and the regular routine of their day. Research suggests that consistent absences/late arrivals contribute to gaps in student learning and overall success. In the event that the number of late arrivals or absences are increasing, the school is obligated to contact parents to discuss possible solutions and or supports. We will continue to work in partnership with all families to help our students meet with success. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Code of Conduct Assemblies:

In our continued efforts to keep our school a safe and welcoming Catholic learning/teaching environment, we will be gathering with our students, by division, to review behaviour expectations and our code of conduct over the next two weeks. Please take a moment to review the code of conduct, which can be found in your child’s agenda, and discuss with them as appropriate.

Healthy & Safe Lunches/ Snacks:

Please be aware that we have several children in our school who live with a severe life threatening food allergy to peanuts and nuts (anaphylaxis).  Please choose items carefully when sending lunches and snacks to school.  Please be extra vigilant to avoid sending treats that contain nuts or traces of nuts.  (reminder: Alternate “peanut butter” spreads are difficult to differentiate from the real product and make monitoring student safety a challenge.  Please do not send “peanut butter” look-alike products to school.)  Thank you for your continued cooperation in ensuring the safety of our students.

Reminder – Parent Volunteer Opportunities:

Parent involvement is an essential part of any school community. We continue to see strong parent involvement at our school, which ensures that so many events and traditions continue for our students. At this time, we are looking for parent volunteers to lead our Pizza program and perhaps a couple other school events. If you are interested, please contact us in the office and we will connect you with our volunteer coordinators. Please remember that you must have an updated criminal record check (vulnerable sector screening) or declaration in the office. Thanks in advance!

Winter Uniform Swap:

St. Matthew is having another uniform swap! Thank you to many parents who brought items before and after the Christmas concerts. If you would still like to participate, please send in the items of clothing you wish to swap with your children, or bring them into the office. Your family’s name and how many items submitted will be recorded. During the exchange, you can choose the same amount as donated (2 items donated = 2 new items to choose from)

The exchange will be taking place January 8th from 3-5pm in the school gymnasium. Only families who have participated/donated items for the uniform swap can attend on this day.

On January 15th from 3-5 pm, we invite parents to visit the school to purchase used items – this event will be open to any parent who is interested. Each used uniform item will be $5.00. Please bring cash.

Reminder of Kidssentials Hot Lunch Program – If you are interested in ordering food for your child/ren, please click here to read their December newsletter.

Have a great week and welcome back!

Your Partners,

M. Simon and V. Chininea
