Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are mailing to let you know that we received confirmation from Halton Region Public Health about a new case of COVID-19 in our St. Mary community.

Public Health have completed their investigation, and as the individual was not at school during the period of communicability (when the virus is infectious), they have determined that there is no risk of exposure to any students or staff in our school, and will therefore not be issuing a letter to our community.

Tracking Cases of COVID-19 in our Community

As a school, we have to track and record all confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our community, even when there is no risk of exposure. We are sharing this information in the interest of transparency.

As of today, we will be recording the positive case in our school community. We wanted you to be aware, as this will appear on the Ministry tracking chart, as well as the HCDSB COVID-19 Advisory Board, and may be reported in the media.

A Note About Privacy
As always, maintaining confidentiality is critical. It is extremely critical that we maintain confidentiality and protect the privacy of all members of our community at all times. Even the best of intentions to want to reach out and show support to a family could be experienced as a breach of privacy. Please be especially careful when communicating about these matters that you are respecting the right to privacy of every student, staff and parent in our community. Let’s continue to demonstrate kindness, compassion and respect for each member of our St. Mary family.

Working Together to Keep Our School Healthy and Safe
Please know that we are working very closely with our school board and Public Health to ensure our school is a safe learning environment. We have a number of health and safety protocols that are in place, that were developed in consultation with Halton Region Public Health.

These protocols include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily self-screening for all staff and students prior to coming to school.
  • Physical distancing in the school AND outside.
  • Washing hands regularly throughout the day.
  • The use of masks for students and staff (except where an exemption has been granted due to a pre-existing medical condition).
  • We also ask that parents be role models for our students by self-screening each day, wearing masks and ensuring physical distance while on school property. Please do not congregate on school property when dropping off or picking up your child.

While we know that the news of COVID-19 in our community will be concerning for many parents, students and staff, it is an important reminder for all of us to be especially vigilant in checking for symptoms of COVID-19.

As parents, you can help keep our community safe by checking for symptoms of COVID-19 in your family. Please remind your son or daughter to complete the COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool each day: It is important that they follow health and safety protocols at all times, even outside of school hours.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through a very difficult school year. Stopping the spread of COVID-19 is a community effort, and it continues to be important for our school community to work together to follow Public Health measures so that we can ensure a safe, healthy and happy learning environment for all.
