Confirmed Case of COVID-19 in Our St. Mary School Community

Sunday October 25, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We received confirmation this afternoon about a positive case of COVID-19 in our St. Mary school community.

Halton Public Health have completed their investigation, and based on the circumstances, they have determined that there is no risk of exposure to any students or staff in our school community.

Please note that a positive case in our community does not necessarily mean the individual was exposed to COVID-19 at school. They may have been exposed elsewhere.

As a school, we have to track and record all confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our community, even when there is no risk of exposure. We are sharing this information with all of our families in the interest of transparency.

An Important Note About Privacy and Confidentiality
All information collected by Public Health is protected by Ontario’s privacy legislation for health information, the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004. In accordance with this privacy legislation, details about confirmed cases are not shared by Public Health.

One of the benefits of being a part of a tight-knit school community like ours is that it feels almost like an extended family. The downside is that it is sometimes difficult to ensure anonymity and maintain confidentiality when it comes to situations such as these. It is extremely critical that we respect the right to privacy for all members of our community at all times. Even the best of intentions to want to reach out and show support to a family or staff member could be experienced as a breach of privacy.

Halton Public Health have conducted a thorough investigation and are working diligently to ensure our community is safe in a manner that also protects the privacy of families and individuals.

While we know that the news of COVID-19 in our community will be concerning for many parents, students and staff, it is an important reminder for all of us to be especially vigilant in monitoring for symptoms of COVID-19.

As parents, you can help keep our community safe by checking for symptoms in your children and completing the COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool for Schools each day before sending your children to school:

Please know that we are working very closely with our school board and Public Health to monitor the situation at our school and ensure all health and safety protocols are followed.

Thank you for your continued efforts and support as we work together to help keep our school community safe.
