Nearly 20% of our St. Mary students have opted to begin the school year learning online.  We will have 700 students returning to in school learning The Board Motion to Lower Elementary Class Sizes led to a variety of changes and a restructuring of several classes. Due to the timing and complexity of the process this year, we will not be able to accommodate any requests for changes to class placements.

Preparations for a Safe Start

Our staff has been working diligently preparing the school for our physical return. We will have new protocols for a staggered entry in the morning, for recesses, for lunches and a staggered dismissal at the end of the day. Our schoolyard will have different “zones” to play in with their class cohorts. These new protocols may seem a bit different at first, but we are confident that children will become accustomed to them quickly and that the joy of being back together will make it all worthwhile. Please see our St. Mary Return to School Plan  for more details re these new procedures that have been developed in an effort to keep everyone healthy and safe.

Children Attending Online Schooling

Once online classes have been organized, you will receive more information from your classroom teachers. For more information about the online delivery model please see here:

Yard Supervision begins at 8:40 a.m. For the safety of your child(ren) we request that your child NOT be on school property until a supervisor is on duty. For safety, please see that your children leave home with ample time to ensure that they arrive at school prior to the bell at 8:55 a.m. Encourage your children to use appropriate crosswalks and walkways. Establish routines at home that will assist your child to arrive on time. Please be aware that the volume of traffic in the parking lot increases significantly just prior to the entry bell.  Children arriving late for school must first report to the office for a late slip.

The Halton Student Transportation Service (HSTS) has communicated that school bus transportation to and from school will be available beginning Monday, September 14, 2020. Once transportation arrangements have been finalized, HSTS will be sending an email to parents so that they may confirm  the route number, pick- up time and location through the parent portal. If your child is eligible for bus transportation but does not plan on riding the bus to school next year, please complete the HSTS Opt-Out Form online.

For more information, visit the HSTS website at: .  A reminder that Courtesy Seats Will Not Be Offered on School Buses for the 2020-21 School Year.

We appreciate that many families rely on school buses to get their children to and from school, and we are hopeful that you will be able to make alternative arrangements for the first week of school.  Students will be assigned seating on the bus and required to wear a mask this year.

Medical Perils

We will be using the current Student Plan of Care for our medical peril students. Please ensure you have updated the office of any changes to your child’s plan of care. Once the Board has updated the medical peril forms, we will send those packages to parents to update and return to the office.

Please be aware that St. Mary School strives to be a nut aware environment. We have students with life-threatening allergies to nuts and other allergens. No peanut butter or other nut products are allowed. Please check labels before sending items in school lunches and for snacks. Even a trace of nut oil from one child’s fingers to a desk surface can cause a deadly reaction. Please note that Wow Butter (soy product) is not allowed as well since we cannot distinguish between it and peanut butter.

Student Agendas

We will not be using student agendas this coming school year.  For those families that purchased them back in June, we will refund your money via school cash on-line in the coming weeks.  We will be using our Learning Management Systems as our home/school communication tool this year in an effort to minimize the items going between home and school.

A reminder that students are expected to be in full uniform for the first day of school. More information can be found here: ISW Uniforms

Safe Arrival Program

The Safe Arrival program has been established to ensure that your child arrives safely at school. Parents are encouraged to use the School Messenger app to record absences or the toll free line 1- 844-445-4505.

Bicycle Safety

If your children ride bicycles to school, we remind you to ensure that your children’s bicycles are roadworthy, that your children are familiar with the rules of the road, and that their bicycles conform to local municipal by-laws with respect to licensing, operation and equipment. All students need to wear helmets when riding a bicycle. They must ride them to the edge of school property and then walk.

Skateboards, Scooters, Roller-Blades, Wheelies

Please note that under board policy No.Iv-5c Playground Safety, skateboards, scooters and roller-blades are prohibited for use during the instructional day. Students will be allowed to use the roller-blades, wheelies, scooters and skateboards as a method of transportation to school as they would a bicycle. However, the same rules apply. They must ride them to the edge of school property and then walk.
