HCDSB Distance Learning Plan
The Board has prepared a guide for families that provides information around the curriculum delivery, assessment and evaluation as it pertains to teacher-led distance learning during this period of school closure. Click HERE to access the Guide.
There are many helpful sites for parents and students posted on our school and Board websites. They include tips, guidelines and resources to help support families in distance learning. Please continue to check the websites regularly as more information gets posted. You will also notice there is a new tab called ‘Learn at Home’ at the top of our landing page of our school website which contains many valuable resources.
Award of Excellence
Every year, the Board recognizes one student from every school with the Award of Excellence. This award is given to students who demonstrate Catholic Leadership within and outside the school and are a positive role model for the school community. It is with great pleasure that we announce Davis Federico as the recipient of this year’s Award of Excellence. The Board normally holds a ceremony during this month to honour the recipients, but unfortunately with the current circumstance the ceremony could not take place. We would like to congratulate Davis on this wonderful achievement!
Volunteer Appreciation Week
This past week marked Volunteer Appreciation Week. We are so grateful to all our volunteers who give generously of their time to help support our school community. We normally would have a volunteer tea during the past month to celebrate you, but given the current circumstances we will reschedule this to a future date when we can all be together safely. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
We are now gathering photos for our 2019-2020 yearbook. If you would like to contribute photos of school events, teams or clubs in action, and fieldtrips, please email your photos to firstname.lastname@example.org and put the classroom teacher’s name on the subject line or the name of the event. Thank you in advance, for your photos.
Home School Communication
Now more than ever the relationship between home and school is key to your child’s success, and we will continue to keep the lines of communication open with our parents. Please note that this week each teacher has posted their classroom, “Week At A Glance”, which outlines the next steps and learning opportunities for the coming week on their classroom platform. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns about their learning.
St. Mary Tip
Parenting During Covid-19
- Reassure your children that your family is your top priority.
Say things like “I’m your parent and it’s my job to keep you safe.”
- Make sure your children know you are available to talk.
Stop what you are doing and listen with your eyes and your ears.
We want children to know that their questions will be answered and their feelings will be validated. Keep answers simple and give information from a trusted source.
- Maintain Family Routines.
Try to keep mealtimes, schoolwork and bedtimes predictable. Have a visual daily plan if possible. Children feel safe when there is structure and routine in place.
- Free time
Allow lots of time for play, art, exercise and outdoors to allow children to recharge with healthy activities which help maintain perspective.
Parents need to rest & refuel as well. You cannot help your children if you are depleted. Time does not always have to be filled. Give yourself permission to enjoy the peace & quiet by taking a break. This also models the importance of self-care for your child.
We continue to draw on our faith and offer prayers for the safety and well-being of those who are sick, and those who are working on the frontlines to care for them.
