Candy Drive

St. Mary’s Student Parliament is proud to announce that it will be holding a Candy Drive. The school welcomes any candy donations that our students may wish to provide to the Canadian Food for Children organization.  This is a great opportunity to share Halloween candy with less fortunate children around the world.

Canadian Food for Children ships the candy directly to agencies who work with children who are malnourished and often dehydrated. The sugar in the candy stimulates their appetites and saliva which are necessary for these starving children to eat again.

Donations of candy, chocolate and chips will be collected from Wednesday, November 6 until Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

Sickness

With Flu and Cold Season upon us it is important to minimize the spread of germs.  If your children are sick, we kindly ask that you keep them child home from school until they are feeling better in order to reduce the spread of these unwanted germs. Common sense can go a long way toward staying healthy in school. In addition to frequent hand-washing, encourage your child to:

  • Use hand sanitizer. Give your child hand sanitizer to use when hand-washing isn’t possible.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Teach your child to cough or sneeze into a tissue — then toss it. If it isn’t possible to reach a tissue in time, remind your child to cough or sneeze into the crook of his or her arm.
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Remind your child that germs spread this way.
  • Steer clear of colds. When possible, help or encourage your child to avoid close contact with anyone who has a cold.

St. Mary Tips

The key to learning self-regulation skills…is not to avoid situations that are difficult for kids to handle, but to coach kids through them and provide a supportive framework — clinicians call it “scaffolding” the behavior you want to encourage — until they can handle these challenges on their own. Dry runs are another way to scaffold self-regulation. For instance, try paring down the activity so it is more doable, and slowly give your child more and more independence to handle it–Child Mind Institute
