Weekly Update – Feb. 3

“LET NO ONE EVER COME TO YOU WITHOUT LEAVING BETTER AND HAPPIER. BE THE LIVING EXPRESSION OF GOD’S KINDNESS: KINDNESS IN YOUR FACE, KINDNESS IN YOUR EYES, KINDNESS IN YOUR SMILE.”

Saint Teresa of Calcutta

February is a wonderful “look-ahead” month as we encounter the mid-point not only of the winter season, but also of the school year.  As the hours of daylight become longer, we look forward to the promise of spring.  Wishing all families celebrating, a Happy Chinese New Year (Year of the Rat)!

Black History Month

During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.  Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country.  At St. Mark, the students will be learning about various historical Black Canadians and their contributions to Canada.

Feeduary / Walk to School Wednesdays / February Spirit Days

This February we will be celebrating and recognizing Halton Food for Thought (Feeduary) programs and getting active with our Winter Walking Wednesdays.  The food prepared and served, meets Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services Guidelines and follows Safe Food Handling Practises.  We are grateful for Mrs. Ayivie who volunteers to prepare and organize our snack bins for each class, on a weekly basis. Data shows that one in 10 Halton students arrive at school hungry.  Students with access to healthy food choices are more alert and perform better academically.

We will be having 4 spirit days to help raise funds that will support St. Mark’s Snack Bin Program directly. We are asking families to donate $5.00, using the school’s Cash Online System to participate in this month’s Spirit Days:

February 5th – Walking Wednesday and Cozy Clothes Day

February 12th- Walking Wednesday

February 13th – Pink and/or Red Day

February 19th – Walking Wednesday and Winter Head Gear (toque / ear muffs /  fancy headband) Day

February 26th – Walking Wednesday and Wear a Touch of Pink / Stand Up to Bullying – We will remember a young Grade 9 boy from Nova Scotia who chose to wear a pink shirt to school and was bullied because of his choice. We encourage our students and staff to wear pink and take a stand to make a difference by promoting actions of kindness, thoughtfulness, and acceptance.

THANK YOU for your continued support in helping us collect funds for our Snack Bin Program!!
