Italian Heritage Month

June is Italian Heritage Month in Canada when the community honours and celebrates the exceptional contributions of Canadians of Italian origin in shaping cities in the provinces across Canada. The first Italian to land in Canada was the explorer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) in 1497. However, the first settlement of Italians in Canada did not occur until 1665 when soldiers from areas of what is now present-day Italy were recruited by the French army to be part of their Carignan-Salières Regiment. The majority of Italians are Roman Catholics and when they immigrated, they brought their religious traditions to Canada with them. They began to build churches, where they would pray to God, but the churches also served as a place where they could meet, help each other and share their traditions.

St. Joseph’s Tips

A Prayer for Fathers
Today, on Father’s Day, and for all the days of his life, fill him with the best of Your blessings, so that one day he will stand before you and hear Your ultimate words of praise, “Well done, my son, well done!”
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
