Weekly Update October 18

“Live for yourself and you will live in vain;
Live for others, and you will live again.”
~ Bob Marley

Welcome to another wonderful week at St. John. This week we turn our focus to “The Secret Path” and walk for Chanie Wenjack. Friday, October 22nd will be a non-uniform day. Twoonie donations are encouraged as we raise funds for The Walk with Wenjack Foundation. Walk For Wenjack honours Chanie Wenjack and the thousands like him who never made it home from the Residential Schools.

The first Walk for Wenjack took place in 2016 and retraced the steps of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who died after escaping residential school and attempting to reach his family 600km away. It started at the Cecillia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Kenora, ON, and continued to Redditt, ON for a ceremony representing Chanie’s final resting spot near Farlane, ON.  Since then, people across the country have hosted their own walk to educate and raise awareness of the true history and impact of residential schools.

Everybody has their own reason to Walk for Wenjack. For some, it may be a moment to honour Chanie and the many others like him. For others, it may be an opportunity to raise awareness of the true history of residential schools. Each Walk for Wenjack is unique.

This year, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund is challenging all Canadians to “Do Something”, as Gord would say, and participate in their own Walk for Wenjack. Thank you in advance for your support as we continue on the road of Truth and Reconciliation.

Important Reminders:

  • Reminder for families in grade 2 and 7 wishing to take part in Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation that forms must be completed and dropped off at St. John Church. Forms were emailed at the end of September.
  • When bringing Bikes to school please make sure that you are locking them up as the bike area is unmonitored during the day.
  • Pokémon cards are becoming a distraction for many of our students. Students are reminded they are not to share/trade cards at school and we are not responsible for lost or stolen cards. Items of value, either monetary or sentimental, should be kept at home where they are safe.
  • Pizza Day orders on School Cash online are open and available until Friday, October 29th. Please contact the office if you require assistance.
  • Reminder to be checking Digital classrooms for your child(ren) as teachers are posting work and information to the sites on a regular basis. Although we are fortunate to be back at school we do have to be prepared that classes could pivot to online learning should a positive case happen in their class. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about accessing the digital system.
  • Monday, November 1st is Picture Day for all students. Students are expected to be in full uniform for the pictures.

Spooktacular Halloween Dance-a-thon:

On Friday October 29th we will be celebrating Halloween. For those of you new to St. John This is a time honoured tradition to that showcases the talents of our students and allows for some fun. All students are welcome to wear costumes or black and orange. Dance performances by students will be filmed and presented in individual classes and each class will have a gym time for their class to get their groove on. Should the weather hold out we will take the party to the playground to maximize the fun in a safe way! Please note that we ask families to not send in Halloween Treats to share with the class. The school will purchase School Safe Cookies for every student to help celebrate the day in a safe way.

Costume considerations to be safe at school:

Costumes must not:

  • Impair vision or breathing, there are no masks as students will be wearing masks for COVID-19 protocol;
  • Present a trip hazard to the wearer or the bystander;
  • Represent disfiguring injury or, to put it bluntly, “blood and guts”;
  • Promote themes or activities inappropriate for a Catholic elementary school;
  • Be revealing or suggestive;
  • Include weapons or replica weapons;
  • Require staff to apply or remove costume pieces and/or make-up
  • Please take special care to make sure that costumes do not appropriate other cultures, or represent stereotypes that are offensive or thoughtless in nature.

Costumes must:

  • Allow the student easy, independent access to the washroom. This is especially important for students from FDK to grade 2.
  • Allow the student to wear sufficiently warm clothing over or under the costume as weather/temperature dictates for outdoor recess.

The Spooktacular Halloween Dance-a-thon will coincide with our School Fundraiser, which is a donation Campaign. Information was sent out earlier this week explaining the donation process. Looking forward a “spooky” Halloween!

Daily Self Screening:

All staff and students must self-screen every day before attending school. The province will continue to provide a screening tool for use by all school boards and may update this throughout the school year. All staff and students who are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 as identified in the screening tool, must not attend school and should follow the guidance provided in the screening tool, which may include seeking appropriate medical attention as required, and/or getting tested for COVID-19.

Reminder that when entering school property all students and caregivers need to be masked as we cannot guarantee social distancing during busy drop off and pick up times. Thank you for your continued support in this matter.

Have a wonderful week! Stay safe and be well. I pray for every family to stay healthy and safe. Please continue to follow the direction of Public Health so we can safely attend school. Please follow us on twitter @stjburlington to see all the great things happening at school!
