Weekly Update June 1

“Because that’s what kindness is. It’s not doing something for someone else because they can’t, but because you can.”

Andrew Iskander

Welcome to June! I want to thank everyone for their patience and dedication as we have maneuvered our way through distance learning. None of us could have predicted the year we have had but we are almost at the finish line. Please note that there will still be celebrations as we move towards the end, especially for our grade 8 students. Plans will be communicated as they are developed. Thank you all for your continued support!

The board is still working on a plan with the region and the ministry for the pickup of items from school. This will be communicated to you as soon as it is finalized. I anticipate it will take place during the last week of June.

Good news for our families that have been accessing the reading program Lexia. The license has been extended and students will have the ability to use the program through the month of July. This has been a fabulous tool to support our littlest readers during this time of distance learning!

Please note that we are waiting on clarification from the ministry regarding summer learning programs for grades 1-5. If you are interested in Literacy and Numeracy Summer School for grade 6-8 please see here for more information.

Mental Health and Well-being:

With the changes and challenges in our community due to Covid 19 our youth may be experiencing greater amounts of anxiety and depression. Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) is offering a webinar for parents in understanding what anxiety is and how it shows up in children and teens. Please follow the link here for details on signing up.

Halton Catholic Children’s Education Fund:

The HCCEF is a charitable organization that supports in need in our community. They have been a strong supporter of students at St. John in the past and are ready and willing to lend a hand, or a dollar, whenever called upon. The current health crisis has increased the need for this organization in our community but of course has limited their ability to run their regular fundraising initiatives to support the funding necessary to continue their work. This year they will be holding a “Virtual 24 hour Fast” On June 3rd and 4th. A number of St. John staff will be participating in the fast.

Fast from…. Food? Social Media? Something Else?

You Will Help Your Neighbours in Need

Fasting will connect us to our neighbours who are in need – those who are forced to fast by their poverty.

Struggling HCDSB families need your help to purchase food and other basic necessities.

Our faith guides us to help our neighbors in need. “…whatever you do for the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you do for me…” Matthew 25:40

We are inviting members of the Halton community to join the “HCCEF 24 Hour Fast” to help raise much-needed funds for HCDSB Students & Families in Need.

We invite schools (students, staff & parents), parishes and other community groups/individuals to form a team, ask their friends and family to sponsor them, and help a GREAT cause.

If you would like to join our St. John Knights team or wish to donate to this very worthy cause pleased follow the link attached here.

Have a wonderful week! Stay safe and be well. Please continue to follow the guidelines of the Public Health Department to ensure we all stay healthy and well!
