Weekly Update Oct 11th to Oct 15th

Dear Lord, on this Thanksgiving Day I want to pause and thank you for the blessings surrounding me. For another day, for family, friends, for food on the table. You are the source of all good things and praise you for the simple things that bring us joy. Help us keep our eyes on this day and every day so our lives may be filled with praise and joy.

Amen.

Thanksgiving

Monday, October 11th is the Thanksgiving Holiday. There is no school on Thanksgiving Day.

We wish all our families a blessed Thanksgiving long weekend.

Terra Cotta Cookies

This year SJOA will be offering Terra Cotta cookies twice a week beginning on October 12th.  Parents will have the option to purchase cookies and/or juice as an added snack on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  All orders need to be completed through School Cash Online using the following link, https://www.schoolcashonline.com/

Hot Lunch Program

This year we are happy to announce that our lunch programs will resume.  We are in the process of securing vendors and ordering information and will have this out to the community in the coming days.  Thank you SJOA Catholic School Council for all your hard work behind the scenes getting everything together.

Halloween Dance-a-Thon

🎃🎃🎃 Are your kids ready for some spooktacular fun? 🎃🎃🎃

Our annual Halloween Dance A Thon is returning this year on Friday, October 29th so please mark your calendars.

This is the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year and we are counting on you to make it the most successful one yet! Please stay tuned for further details next week. It’s going to be a  “gourd” time for all involved!

Halloween at SJOA

On Friday, October 29th, 2021, staff and students are encouraged to show their Halloween spirit by dressing up in costume or wearing orange and/or black.  Parents and students are reminded to be mindful of our Catholic learning environment and the well-being of our students when selecting costumes. As a result, we ask that students do not wear/bring masks, weapon replicas, costumes that violate our dress code, and any other costume that would be considered inappropriate or against our Catholic values.  Suggested questions to reflect on when choosing a costume:

  1. Is my costume making fun of a group of people, their culture or religion?
  2. Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures or religions?
  3. Am I altering my skin colour, facial/body features to make it darker or like a particular race, ethnicity or cultural group?
  4. Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?
  5. Do I understand and respect the history or traditions of the culture that I am borrowing my from?

Students will have the opportunity on this day to dance and participate in-class activities.  Should weather permit, students will have the opportunity to dance outside with their classmates.

Reminders

We would like to remind parents/family members that there are No Dogs Allowed on school property or on our playground as these areas are for students and staff only. We would also ask that parents/guardians please wear a Mask when on school property.  We strive to maintain this practice to ensure our students and staff remain safe.

Mental Health Update

In our ever-changing world, the use of technology is continuously expanding. It influences every area of our lives, from our ability to communicate with loved ones to accessing information at our fingertips. Unfortunately, we have also seen the negative effects of technology on mental health and well-being, and this has had a significant impact on our children and youth. For more information on how to better help/support your child/children manage digital technology, you can check out the resource created by School Mental Health Ontario (SMHO), the link is copied below.

What happens if your child feels unwell at school?

It is important for your son or daughter to let their teacher know if they are feeling unwell at school.  Students who show signs/symptoms of COVID-19 during the school day will be taken to our school’s ‘isolation room’ and we will contact the parent or guardian to come and pick them up. It is very important that we have current contact information for all of our families so that we can get in touch with you quickly. Please contact our school office if there have been any recent changes to your contact information. You could call our main office or email our Secretary, Mrs. Freeze, at freezev@hcdsb.org
