Weekly Update June 14th to 18th

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.  Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.

St. Matthew Parish

Together with all citizens and residents of Canada, I have watched and read with horror the accounts of our increasing awareness of the injustices visited upon the First Nations of this land. The immensity of the harm caused by the racist and imperialistic policies of government is beyond measure; it is a scourge that will affect society forever. The fact that the state enlisted the help of Christian religious communities in carrying out these atrocities, and the fact that the latter complied, compounds the experience of shame and regret. The Gospel of the Lord was betrayed when it was used to extinguish culture. Christian community was debased when it became the seat of abuse. Realities like this can be crushing. These aren’t the values of the polity of which I am a part; these aren’t the values of the Church I serve. Like many of you, I’ve experienced a generous measure of mental, emotional, and spiritual paralysis in the face of this evil; the deep and abiding sense that something must be done combined with a humbling, and at times shameful, lack of knowledge regarding what that something might be. Leaders of church and state are working with members of First Nations communities to advance the cause of healing, and this work must continue driven by a genuine desire to ameliorate the condition of those suffering from the effects of these actions. Pope Francis met recently with Canadian Cardinals in Rome, in a step that can only be seen as indicative of the intention to respond further. We must all pray for this process to continue. For my part, as a priest of Jesus Christ and a servant of the Roman Church, I am ashamed of those who so abused their share in the same Sacrament of Holy Orders that I too have received, and I offer my apology to all those harmed by their conduct.

HCCF Golf Tournament

Being outside…check!  Spending the day at the golf course…check!  Helping HCDSB students & families in need…check!  Join HCCF for a fun day of fellowship and fundraising!

All to help HCDSB students in need to succeed in school.

As a Catholic Community, we are called by Jesus to care for others. At the Halton Catholic Children’s Foundation (HCCF), they strive to do this by providing financial assistance to HCDSB students and their families in need – creating Hope, Dignity and Equity so that students can access learning and education without financial barriers to success.

Students at our school have benefitted from HCCF’s financial support in the past. Please consider supporting them so that they can continue to say “Yes” to helping HCDSB students and families with basic necessities (such as food and clothing, school supplies, shoes, eyeglasses, personal hygiene items, and learning technology).

You are invited to support the 10th Annual HCCF Charity Golf Classic on July 20th – Piper’s Heath Golf Club. Golfers, sponsors and prizes are needed.

Not a golfer? Please pass this information along to someone who is, or consider making a personal / corporate donation.
