Weekly Update Nov. 16th to 20th

God of love and of life, let us take time to look deep within ourselves and discover the gifts you have blessed us with. May we take the time to direct our lives in a way that best uses our own unique combination of gifts. May our education help us discover where our strengths and interests lie. May our faith guide us in realizing our gifts. May we always be open to the direction of the Spirit and never forget the love you have for each of us. Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look within ourselves and discover the beauty and gifts we possess. Give us the courage to show others the talents they have. Help us serve others in the community and in so doing build up your kingdom. We ask this through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Bullying Awareness Week

From November 16th-20th, 2020, the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) will join school boards around the province in enhancing awareness and understanding about bullying, and the factors that contribute to safe, caring, and inclusive schools. This week, and every week, we work to ensure that our school is safe and welcoming for all, cultivating a positive sense of belonging and well-being! #bullyingawareness

Author Visit

We are excited to announce that Author Ruth Ohi will be virtually meeting with our primary and junior classes on Wednesday, November 18th at 9:30 am.  She will be interacting with the students using Microsoft Teams, discussing the importance of reading and writing, along with sharing one of her books with us.

Virtual Family Fun Night

We are excited to announce that on Thursday, November 19th, we will be hosting our first-ever SJOA Virtual Family Trivia Night! Starting at 7:00 pm, we will be playing 3 separate Kahoot games, each with unique themes.  Winning families will receive a pizza dinner delivered by Mr. Laratta.  Make sure to sign-in on the 19th to join in on the fun.  Don’t forget to tag us @sjoa5 using the hashtag #SJOATriviaNight2020

Mask Reminders

Just a gentle reminder to all parents and guardians that masks are required when entering school property (fence line, parking lot, building).  When waiting near the gates at the beginning of the day or at dismissal, please ensure that masks are worn until you enter your car off school property.  These safety measures are in place in accordance with Halton Public Health and SJOA/HCDSB COVID-19 return to school policy and procedure.  Remember we are all in this together!

Safety

We would like to remind parents, guardians and family members that there are No Dogs Allowed on school property (fence line, sidewalks, parking lot, blacktop and grass area) unless it is a service animal wearing appropriate vest and/or harness, during drop off and pick up time.  We encourage students to walk to and from school when possible and at times this means bringing the dog, however, we ask that all dogs/animals remain off school property during this time.

Late Arrival

A reminder to families that school begins at 8:45 am.  Students are aske to arrive to school between 8:30 and 8:45 am.  Arriving at school on time will teach children the importance of punctuality.  Insist that your children leave the house in time to arrive at school at least five or ten minutes before the bell.  The time spent in the school before class begins is a transition time that allows your child to reconnect with classmates and to refocus on school.

Safe Arrival Program

It is essential that all absences are reported to the office in a timely manner. Please use the absence reporting email link, which can be found at the bottom of our homepage, to report your child’s absence. In some cases, numerous unsuccessful attempts are made when calling cell, work, home and emergency contact phone numbers. As per board procedures, Halton Regional Police must be called after many attempts have been made, to ensure student safety. Please continue to follow our established procedures around student safe arrival.

Self-Assessment Screening Tool

The Ontario government has released changes to the COVID-19 School Screening Tool used to monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in children.  Please use the October 1st Update – COVID-19 Screening Tool for Children tool before leaving for school each day.

Have a Great Week!
