For this event to take place, we need the support of our school community in the forms of both uniform donations, and parent volunteers. If parents can donate their time before, during, and after the event it would be most appreciated. Please let us know your availability by emailing us at:

PA Day – Reminder

A reminder Friday, February 14th is a HCDSB designated Professional Activity Day. The school will be closed to students on this day as they are not expected to attend.

Family Day – Monday February 17, 2020

The basic purpose of Family Day is to provide a special occasion on which Canadians can celebrate family and community life and to provide a holiday in the otherwise holiday-vacant, three-month span between New Year’s Day and Good Friday. Alberta first instituted Family Day in 1990 to celebrate the family life of the early pioneers, Saskatchewan made it a public holiday in 2007, Ontario in 2008, and British Columbia in 2013.

School children and private-sector workers get Family Day off, but as the holiday is a provincial and not a federal matter, federal workers do not get it off. Despite most people being off work to spend time with their families, post offices are still open as are public transportation facilities, though sometimes on a reduced schedule.

On Family Day, many take part in winter sports like ice skating, hockey, skiing, or snowboarding. There are community events and winter festivals to attend all over Canada this time of year. It is also popular to attend art exhibits and various museums, which frequently have discounts or even free entry on Family Day.

Winter Weather and School Attendance

This is the time of year when winter takes a toll on school attendance. Snow and slushy weather can keep parents from getting their children to school. So can the colds, fevers and earaches that often come with the winter months.

These absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. If it is a snowy or rainy day but school is still open, students miss out on learning if they aren’t in class. These absences can result in lower test scores and grades.

There’s not much we can do about the weather, but there are two key steps every family can take to help avoid absences this year.

  • Develop back up plans for getting your children to school in winter weather. That could mean checking with other families who have a car that can manage in the snow or forming a “walking school bus” to walk your children to school with other parents.
  • Keep your children healthy. Dress them warmly for the cold weather and make sure they’ve got hats and gloves. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly. If your children do get sick, talk to a doctor about whether they should come to school and when it is okay for them to return. Above all, let us know how we can help. We want your children and all our students to succeed and that means attending school every day possible.

Promoting Well-Being – Attendance Matters!

“Help your child learn to persevere. Today, they learn to overcome a snowdrift. In the future, they will have the grit to triumph over even greater obstacles to their dreams.”
