October 21-27, 2019 is Canada’s Waste Reduction Week. The St. Francis of Assisi school community will be focusing on five initiatives to help students become Stewards of the Earth. We encourage you to discuss Waste Reduction Week with your child(ren) and also encourage you to try these strategies at home!

Good On One Side (GOOS) Paper Day – Teachers and students will be challenged to create a GOOS Paper basket within the classroom that allows them to have access to recycled paper for writing, math, art, and more!

Trashless Tuesday – Students will be encouraged to examine the amount of waste that is coming to school in their lunch bags. Students will also be reminded about the importance of sorting their waste into the compost, recycling, and garbage bins to avoid contamination.

Take Me Outside Day – Wednesday October 23rd is Canada’s Take Me Outside Day. Students are encouraged to explore nature and examine their natural surroundings both at school and at home.

Reusable Water Bottle Day
Students will be reminded about the importance of bringing a reusable water bottle to school to help eliminate the presence of single-use plastics. To date, we have eliminated waste from 80830 plastic water bottles!

Paperless Friday – Staff and students will be challenged to explore alternatives to paper including erasable white boards, rich discussions, games and in-class activities.
