January 25, 2019 Update

January 27 is the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.  This date has been designated by the United Nations as International Holocaust Awareness Day, as a way for all of us to develop an understanding of what St. Pope John Paul II described as “the inhumanity with which the Jews were persecuted and massacred,” during the Holocaust in Europe.

Unfortunately, the kind of thinking that allowed that to happen still exists in our world and we all have a responsibility to try to change it. What we often call “The Golden Rule” is a good guide for our lives: we should treat everyone the way we would like to be treated. We all know that we are supposed to treat others fairly: bullying, picking on people because they are different from us, any behaviour that acts out the belief that we are better or more important than others, goes against what Jesus teaches us. This doesn’t mean we have to be best friends with everyone, just that we treat everyone fairly, politely and with respect, everywhere and all the time.

As a community, the partnership between home and school should always reinforce this positive message with our children, using the example that Jesus provided us with.  Let us all remember that we have been created equally, and in the image of God.

Our updates for the week of January 28, 2019 are below:

We welcome Ms. Morassutti, our new office assistant, to St. Francis of Assisi on Monday, January 28, 2019.  Ms. Morassutti will be at our school on Mondays, Wednesdays and alternating Fridays.  We thank Mrs. Nizic and Mrs. Robling who have assisted our school as temporary office assistants prior to Ms. Morassutti joining our staff;

With the recent winter weather that we have experienced, a reminder about bus cancellations:

  • The decision to cancel bus operations is made by the Halton Student Transportation Services, not St. Francis of Assisi School;
  • If a bus route is not operating in the morning, it will not operate in the afternoon, even if driving conditions improve throughout the day.
    • If your child’s bus transportation has been cancelled, but parents / guardians have opted to drive them to school, you are also responsible for picking your child up from school at the end of the day;
  • Questions, concerns or comments that parents / guardians have regarding the cancellation of bus transportation should be directed to Halton Student Transportation Services via www.haltonbus.ca/about/contact-us/

A reminder that supervision of students prior to the commencement of the school day does not begin until 8:55am.  Unless your child is required to be at school early for a team practice or additional academic support, students cannot be inside the school or in the school yard until a staff member is present at 8:55am.  Your support is appreciated;

Please be reminded that the school parking lot and driveway are for staff members and visitors who will be parking and entering the school.  Parents/guardians are not to park, drop off your children, or drive-through this area from 8:45am – 9:15am and from 3:30pm – 4:00pm.  We understand that this is not the most convenient system for all families, however, it is the safest system for all of our students.  Your understanding is appreciated;

Our major school fundraiser this year will be a chocolate sales fundraiser.  More information will be shared in the coming weeks, however, you can learn more here:  Chocolate Fundraiser;
