Pancake Tuesday– February 25

This Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, or “Pancake Tuesday”. This is the day preceding Ash Wednesday and is celebrated in many countries by the consumption of pancakes! In other countries, it is known as “Mardi Gras” as it is the “last day of fat-eating” prior to the fasting period of Lent. We have parent volunteers gathering to cook a pancake treat for students on Tuesday morning in the gym. Parents are reminded to please indicate to their student’s teacher if you wish them to not participate and especially if there are any new dietary concerns. We will have some gluten-free pancakes available upon request.

Ash Wednesday Liturgy – Feb 26

Ash Wednesday is one of the holiest days in our liturgical calendar. This day leads us into Lent, the season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday. We will be distributing the ashes this Wednesday during a liturgy led by Mrs. Horvath’s Grade 7 at 1:15 pm in our gymnasium. All are welcome to attend!

Pink Shirt Day – Feb 26

Pink Shirt Day, or Anti-Bullying Day, is on Wednesday, February 26. It is now the national anti-bullying day in Canada. It started in 2007 when David Shepherd and Travis Price, of Berwick, Nova Scotia, bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after male ninth grade student, Chuck McNeill, was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. The focus for 2020 is “lift each other up”.

We are inviting our students to wear a pink shirt or pink accessory (uniform bottoms) on Wednesday to stand united in our quest for kindness~ “Be the I in Kind”. Let’s all do our part in wearing pink to remind us to be an “upstander” when we see someone being treated rudely, meanly or being bullied.

School Level Speeches

Students in Grades 4-8 who wish to compete in the school-based contest are now preparing speeches. One student per grade level will be chosen to take part in our school level speech competition and will be competing on Thursday, March 5 at 1:15 PM in our gymnasium. One student from our school will be selected to go on to the municipal speech levels. Good luck to all our speakers!

Term 1 Report Cards

If you haven’t already done so, please sign and return the bottom portion of the last page of the report card, as well as the envelope, to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. While there are no formal interviews at this time, you are reminded that parents are always welcome to request an interview with our teachers to discuss and plan for their child(ren)’s progress and achievement.
