Weekly Update – Dec. 6th – 10th

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

~ John 14:27

The second Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace and we light another purple candle.

As we begin the 2nd week of Advent today, let us pray together…
Thank you, Lord, for sending Jesus into our dark world so that our darkness can turn into light. Faithful God, guide us in your way this Advent and always. As we look forward to the birth of your Son, may our faith grow stronger with every passing day. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Please take a moment with your children to watch a quick video about the true meaning of Advent and Christmas!
You can also click here for an interactive Advent calendar & other activities.

Families are also invited to participate in daily Advent reflections. Below are links to some wonderfully made Advent Calendars and Resources for you and your family to pray with.

Advent Outreach Initiatives – Angel Tree & Food Drive:
Part of being a Catholic community is living our faith in the way we support others. We are happy to continue our annual Advent tradition with two initiatives this year, our Angel Tree and Advent Food Drive. A separate message has been sent, however, please see our homepage message (or the file below) for more information on how to participate and support those in need this Christmas! Please note, we have decided not to run our Mitten Tree initiative this year. However, if you have any new hats, gloves, mittens, etc. and you wanted to donate them, we will ensure they are passed along to those in need.

Family Vacations/School Absences
Some families have contacted us about the process for missing school due to a planned or potential family vacation outside of Canada. Please note that unless students are fully vaccinated (for more than 14 days after the second dose), there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. To be sure, please ensure you continue to carefully complete the Ontario Daily School Screening Tool each day. If you do go away, please keep the following in mind:
  • A “vacation form” must be completed and signed in the Office, indicating absence length and return date. Absences must be submitted in School Messenger;
  • If your travel time (not including a quarantine period) is longer than 15 school consecutive school days, contact with school administration is necessary, as a different process must be followed;
  • Teaching staff will do their best to provide guidance and resources for missed time, however, parents are responsible for the missed learning. The nature of lessons and assessment happening in class cannot be replicated in the form of any work provided in advance;
  • Any work completed while away from school cannot be assessed/evaluated by teaching staff afterwards;
  • Any questions can be directed to the school office.
Indigenous Art Family Paint Night

HCDSB families, students and staff are invited to participate in a virtual family paint night to get creative at home and learn about Indigenous art!

Human Rights and Equity Advisory Council
Our HCDSB schools are committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming learning environments that support student achievement and well-being in our Catholic schools. Human Rights and Equity are guiding values that are consistent both with Catholic Social Teaching, reaffirming the dignity of every individual, as well as the Ontario Human Rights Code, which safeguards students and staff from discrimination based on the protected grounds.
The Board’s Equity and Inclusive Education Steering Committee is in the process of forming a Human Rights and Equity Advisory Council (HREAC) to engage community stakeholders including parents, students and community organizations.

The purpose of the HREAC is to assist in identifying community needs and to provide advice and guidance on addressing systemic barriers and supporting historically underserved members of the 2SLGBTQ+, racialized and Black communities in the HCDSB.
Apply now!
Parents/guardians and students in Grades 7-12 interested in serving on the HREAC are invited to submit an application online through the HREAC Membership Application Form, which will remain open until December 31st, 2021.
