Human Rights and Equity Advisory Council
Our HCDSB schools are committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming learning environments that support student achievement and well-being in our Catholic schools. Human Rights and Equity are guiding values that are consistent both with Catholic Social Teaching, reaffirming the dignity of every individual, as well as the Ontario Human Rights Code, which safeguards students and staff from discrimination based on the protected grounds.
The Board’s Equity and Inclusive Education Steering Committee is in the process of forming a Human Rights and Equity Advisory Council (HREAC) to engage community stakeholders including parents, students and community organizations.
The purpose of the HREAC is to assist in identifying community needs and to provide advice and guidance on addressing systemic barriers and supporting historically underserved members of the 2SLGBTQ+, racialized and Black communities in the HCDSB.
Parents/guardians and students in Grades 7-12 interested in serving on the HREAC are invited to submit an application online through the HREAC Membership Application Form.
We are pleased to be able to celebrate at Holy Cross Parish for our annual Advent mass in person this year. Mass will take place on December 9th at 7 p.m. We look forward to welcoming those who are able to attend and celebrating together in joyful hope during the Advent season.
This year, we are continuing to offer the purchase of gingerbread houses, from Parties Made Simple, a nut and peanut-free facility. We would typically host an evening to decorate the houses here at school, however, due to Covid-19 restrictions we won’t be able to hold an evening in-person this year.
Instead, we will arrange for a ‘curbside pick-up’ on December 8th. Families who order gingerbread houses will be able to pick up from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. or 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. More information will follow.
We will provide more information once all orders are in. You can order gingerbread houses online up until November 22nd on School Cash Online.
Our Catholic School Council is offering an opportunity to order poinsettia arrangements for the upcoming holiday season. All money raised will be donated to Holy Cross HELPS and Halton Food for Thought. Ordering will be available through School Cash Online from Monday, November 8th and Thursday, November 25th.
For more information, see our Feature Story.
We will be holding Parent-Teacher Interviews at the school this week, on the evening of Thursday, November 25th and during the day Friday, November 26th.
Online scheduling for appointments is now closed. If you were unable to book an appointment, your child’s teacher will reach out to book a time, or you are free to contact the teacher to set something up.
Scholastic Book Fair
All classes had a chance to preview the book fair last week. This week, students are invited to visit the library to make purchases of items.
Please see the attachment for more details on this year’s book fair.
Photo retakes have been scheduled for December 13th. Due to Edge Imaging’s closure over the Christmas holidays, photo proofs from retake day will not be available until the new year.
Hot Lunch Programs
Please note, you can continue to place orders for the coming weeks. See the attached letter for further information regarding ordering:
Gluten-free options are available to order online as well.
Please note that if you know you will be away to cancel your order through Lunch Box ahead of time. The sorting and delivery of pizza is a large undertaking for our office staff and delivering pizza to the door is an added challenge during the lunch hour. We appreciate your understanding.
If you have any questions, please contact the office.
Students Leaving for Lunch
Students who are leaving school property for lunch are expected to continue to follow public health guidelines including masking and distancing when in the community. Students are asked to leave school property promptly and return on time by checking in at the main office. Students are not permitted to be congregating in the public park adjacent to the school property. Your assistance in keeping our school community healthy by adhering to public health guidelines is greatly appreciated.
Bus Student Seating
Please be reminded that students have been assigned seats on both their morning and afternoon bus routes. Students have been told their seats at the beginning of the school year and reminded throughout the year if changes occur.
We would ask that you go onto the following link for HSTS to check for your child’s seat on each bus and remind them of their seat numbers. The seat they sit on in the morning will not necessarily be the same seat at the end of the day.
It is very important that students sit in their assigned seats. If there is a COVID-19 situation whereby the bus is involved, we use the seating charts to do contact tracing and determine those affected, therefore ensuring your child knows their seat is critical.
Daily COVID Screening
Parents/guardians/students must complete the Ontario School Screening Tool each morning prior to or upon arrival for each student. Students will no longer be required to show/provide their classroom teacher confirmation of screening daily.
Screening Tool: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/
Students only attend school if a “✅” is obtained. Students with COVID-like symptoms or who receive an “X” indicating “Do not go to school” must remain home and isolate as instructed.
