School Update – Week of September 13, 2021

Thank You

A big thank you to our parents, students and staff for working together to ensure a safe start to our school year. We are so grateful to all of you– what wonderful role models you are for our students and each other. We appreciated your patience as we navigated so many changes and new routines. Our students did an awesome job at following our new rules and routines. We look forward to journeying together through this school year.

Daily COVID Screening

The Ministry is requiring school boards and schools to implement the daily on-site screening for all elementary and secondary students for the first two weeks of the school year (i.e. September 7 – 17, 2021).

  • Parents/guardians/students must complete the Ontario School  Screening  Tool  each  morning  prior  to or  upon  arrival  for  each  student.
  • Daily On-site Confirmation of Screening for Students Attending In-Person
  • Students will be required to show/provide their classroom teacher confirmation of screening daily in one of the following formats:
    •  Email results  to  classroom  teacher
    •  Students  can  show “pass”  confirmation  on  their  personal device
    •  Printed copy of the screening tool indicating the current date and a “pass”
  • Students only attend school if a “✅” is  obtained.   Students with COVID-like symptoms or  who receive  an  “X”  indicating  “Do not go to school” must remain  home  and  isolate as instructed.

Orange Shirt Day

In honour of the HCDSB’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through Indigenous Education which is marked annually on September 30th, St. Brigid will be wearing orange shirts to recognize the harm residential schools did to children’s sense of self-esteem and wellbeing. This day also honours those that survived, remembers those who did not, and recognizes the ongoing effects of intergenerational trauma.

Wearing an orange shirt is a visual reminder of our shared past and provides an opportunity for dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. It is an opportunity for schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

St. Brigid has partnered with Re-styled Re-designed who is selling tie-dyed shirts with 50% of the sales being donated to Save The Evidence. The Re-styled Re-designed website is setup to purchase online and individuals will be able to select from the dropdown menu which school the T-shirts are going to. Both English and French versions of the t-shirts are available.

All of the T-shirts will be delivered to the school on Tue Sept 28 and distributed to students and staff to wear on September 30th.

If you are interested in purchasing a t-shirt and supporting the Woodlands Cultural organization, please see the attached information. The last day to order a shirt is Friday September 17, 2021

Catholic School Council

In accordance with the Ontario Education Act Regulation 612schools must hold elections for School Council within the first 30 days of each school year. The term of office is one year, and we encourage every parent to consider volunteering to be part of Catholic School Council. Home and school collaboration is essential to maintaining a vibrant school community that considers the voice of all its’ stakeholders. Nomination forms are attached.

The St. Brigid Catholic School Council is comprised of the following members:

  • Catholic parent members
  • Non-Catholic parent members
  • 1 Community Representative (can be a parent)
  • 1 Parish Representative (can be a parent)
  • 1 teaching staff member
  • 1 non-teaching staff member
  • The School Principal/Vice Principal

Should we receive more parent nominations than positions available, an election will take place. Information regarding an election date and process, aligned with COVID-19 protocols, will be communicated further, if necessary. If an election is not needed, and all candidates fulfill the necessary requirements, the positions will be acclaimed, and the school community will be informed of the membership. Further information regarding Catholic School Council can be found below:

HCDSB Policy I-23

HCDSB Procedure VI-84

Candidates are asked to complete a one-page biography for submission with the attached nomination form no later than Friday, September 17th at 4:00pm to Mrs. Odo. Nomination forms can be submitted via email to odol@hcdsb.org or sent to school with a student. Printed copies of the nomination form can be requested through the school office.

We anticipate Catholic School Council meetings will be in a virtual format this year on the first Monday of each month.

We look forward to working closely with our parent community to support the needs of students, families, and Catholic Education in the 2021-2022 school year.
