School Update – Week of September 23, 2019

Dear Parents,

Cross country try-outs are underway! Students interested in representing St. Brigid School must attend try-outs. The HCDSB North Halton Cross Country Meet will take place on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Kelso Conservation Area. This meet will be for all students in Grades 4 to Grade 8 who are selected to represent St. Brigid School.

Senior Girls and Senior Boys Volleyball teams have been posted and team practices are underway! Team members will receive information and practice schedules. Go Bears!

September 24th will be Hometown Hockey Day at all elementary schools in Halton Hills. Schools are invited to show their support for this exciting community event by:

  • Hosting a Jersey Day/Red and White Day – Students are encouraged to celebrate their spirit by wearing their favourite athletic jersey to school.  If students don’t have a jersey, we encourage students to wear red and white as we aim to “Paint the Town Red and White” leading up to the festival weekend.
  • ‘Fill the Net’ Food Drive Challenge – Food donations will be collected to ‘Fill the Net’. Please give what you can. Every single donation helps, and together we hope our combined donations will make a real difference for those in need. Collection of food started September 17th and will continue until the morning of September 25th. Photos of our food display and total number of food items will be submitted, as per the contest, by noon Sep 25th. The school with the greatest number of food items (per capita) will win a special school assembly on October 4th with the Rogers Hometown Hockey crew. Please note that this is in support of our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive – all donations are sent to our local Georgetown Bread Basket. Thank you for your support!

In 2018, a new law called Rowan’s Law was passed in Ontario. It helps protect people who play sports, or play active games in schools, helps teachers, parents/guardians and coaches learn about preventing concussions, and helps people who get concussions to recover. Thanks to Rowan’s Law, all sports organizations and schools in Ontario have new rules in place around concussions.

Curriculum Night and BBQ at St. Brigid School will be on Monday, September 30th. The BBQ is hosted by Troy’s Diner and will take place from 5:00 – 6:15 p.m. Cash, debit and credit will be accepted as payment for food items. Attached is the menu. Please note that bottled water is listed, however will be not sold as per Board directive. We do not sell water, as everyone has the right to clean and accessible water, and as such we will have our refillable stations available, so please feel free to bring your own reusable containers. A reminder that no children should be here unattended by a parent. Classroom visits will follow from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. We look forward to welcoming everyone!

Thank you to our Catholic School Council, as we had a wonderful response and have a large council for this year. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, October 16th in our school library at 6 p.m. The public can attend this meeting.

All parents/guardians of Grade 7 students are invited to attend a meeting following Curriculum Night at 8:00 p.m. regarding Camp Tanamakoon.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton and Hamilton are offering The Cultural Mentorship Program that will run for 15 weeks starting October 26 and the program will be 2.5 hours every Saturday in the afternoon. Please contact school administration if you have interest in this program.

Orange Shirt Day is marked annually on September 30. This day acknowledges the residential school system in Canada, honours those that survived, remembers those who did not, and recognizes the ongoing effects of intergenerational trauma. Orange Shirt Day will be recognized on Friday, September 27, 2019 at St. Brigid School, due to picture day taking place on September 30th.
