Weekly Update February 3

February is Black History Month

Each year, students and staff across the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) are invited to participate in Black History Month, to honour and pay tribute to Black Canadians, both past and present.  For 2020, the theme of the Government of Canada’s Black History Month campaign is: Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past.

A number of events and learning opportunities are planned across Halton and in our schools, including a kick-off celebration at Oakville Town Hall, presented by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton, and the Town of Oakville, in partnership with HCDSB and various community partners.

On Friday, February 7, we are very excited to welcome our own guest speakers from our St. Benedict Community.  Students from grades 4-6 will rotate through presentations, hearing amazing stories of strength, resiliency and perseverance.  Thank you to all the presenters for volunteering their time and sharing their personal journeys with us.

OECTA Update:

We are writing to remind you that all HCDSB schools will be CLOSED to students on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 as a result of the province-wide one-day full withdrawal of services by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA).

The following is a summary of the plan in place for Tuesday, February 4, 2020:

What will be CANCELLED or CLOSED

What will PROCEED or remain OPEN

  • All HCDSB elementary and secondary schools will be CLOSED to students.
  • All Before & After School Programs will be CANCELLED.
  • Credit courses offered at ALL Thomas Merton Centre for Continuing Education locations will be CANCELLED.
  • Childcare centres will remain OPEN as they run independently from our schools.
  • Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes taking place at ALL Thomas Merton Centre locations will PROCEED as scheduled.
  • Community use of schools will PROCEED as scheduled in all HCDSB schools.

Supports for Parents
Although the Before & After School Programs will be cancelled, many extended day providers will offer a full-day program. Parents are encouraged to contact the extended day provider at their child’s school about program offerings.

Financial support is also available for parents for each day of school that is missed due to strike action. For more information and to apply online, click HERE.

If you are unable to access the form online, hard copy applications are available at the Catholic Education Centre reception desk at 802 Drury Lane in Burlington.

Information Updates
As new information becomes available, we will provide updates through:

We regret any disruption to student learning and inconvenience to families that may result from this job action. We remain hopeful that a new central agreement will soon be reached with our OECTA staff.

PITA PIT MONDAY… this week only

On Tuesday February 4th, all HCDSB schools will be closed to students, as a result of the recent announcement by OECTA of a province-wide one-day full withdrawal of services.  We have arranged with Pita Pit to deliver pita orders on Monday February 3rd, instead of the regular day on Tuesday.

We received the following notification from Halton Transportation today:

We received correspondence from the Town of Milton regarding traffic issues in front of St. Benedict School during arrival and dismissal times.

Times have been adjusted where possible to help alleviate some of the congestion with St. Benedict & St. Scholastica bus runs.

Changes have been made, some minor changes (2-3 min), and some larger (5 min) for nearly every run.  If your child(ren) take the bus, please review their pick-up and drop-off times online.  A gentle reminder that parents should be at the stops 5 to 10 minutes prior to their pick up and drop off times to ensure they don’t miss the bus departure/arrival.   Please note mini bus transportation has not been impacted at this time.

These changes will take effect next week on Wednesday February 5th.

Families can login here to check for any changes:

You will need your son/daughter’s OEN (found on the report card), enter your house number, school and grade.  You will also need to click the check box ‘I’m not a robot’ and follow the instructions if requested.

Valentine Dance-A-Thon- Thursday February 13

St. Benedict School is very excited to announce that we will be participating in a Valentine-Dance-A-Thon on Thursday Feb. 13th.  All money raised will be invested in our students (i.e. technology, program materials, guest speakers, and so on).  We are in need of PRIZES FOR STUDENTS, that will help raise money at this fun event.  Some donations we have received in the past consisted of: gift cards, speakers, sports tickets, movie tickets, various technology, dinner vouchers, and so on.  We thank you in advance for all your support with this exciting event for our students.
