We are looking forward to our return to school next week. We have been working hard to implement the detailed Health and Safety protocols as outlined in the HCDSB Return to School Plan as informed by Halton Region Public Health. Staff have received training and are organizing classrooms to once again make them the safest possible learning environments for your child. Many of the safety protocols from last year are still in place and we will be working together to support a healthy and safe return to school for all.
Staggered Entry to School
As per the email from HCDSB last week, there will be a staggered entry for all of our students to support a safe and smooth transition back to school.
The following schedule will apply for all elementary schools:
|Tuesday, September 7th||Only students in Grades 1 – 8 with surnames beginning with the letters |
A-K will come to school.
|Wednesday, September 8th||Only students in Grades 1 – 8 with surnames beginning with the letters |
L-Z will come to school
|Thursday, September 9th||ALL students in Grades 1 – 8 attending in-person instruction will come to school.|
The following dates apply for students entering Kindergarten in one of our HCDSB Catholic elementary schools this September, 2021:
Year 1 Kindergarten
- Orientation interviews for Year 1 Kindergarten students will take place on Tuesday, September 7 and Wednesday, September 8, 2021.
- Staggered entry for Year 1 Kindergarten students will take place on Thursday, September 9 and Friday, September 10, 2021.
- All Year 1 Kindergarten students will begin Monday, September 13, 2021.
Year 2 Kindergarten
- Orientation interviews for Year 2 Kindergarten students who are new to the school will take place on Tuesday, September 7 and Wednesday, September 8, 2021.
- All Year 2 Kindergarten students will begin school on Thursday, September 9, 2021.
Students in K-8 are required to wear their own masks. If a student arrives without a mask, we will provide one. An expectation this year is that students MUST wear their mask when walking through the hallways and out to recess. For this reason, students must be prepared to keep their mask on their person during outdoor recess (not worn during recess, but on them). We will be providing all students with a ziplock bag to keep their mask in during recess. They will be directed to place it in their pocket. Parents may also send their child with a ‘fanny’ pack if they wish for mask storage purposes.
Other School Items
For the start of the year, one pair of shoes is sufficient (indoor shoes not necessary at this point). Students are welcome to start the year off by bringing in their own pencil case with pencils, pens, eraser, and ruler, but teachers will provide a list of essentials the first day. A reminder that students should bring home all personal items each evening. All personal items will also be stored in each classroom during the day (ie. jackets, backpacks), so we would prefer to limit the number of items in each class. Lockers will not be used at this time, although will be available in the near future.
First Day At School
On the staggered first days at school, Sept. 7th and Sept. 8th, when students arrive at school between 9:00 and 9:15 a.m., they will enter the school upon arrival and proceed directly to their classroom. There will be many staff members on the playground, at the entrances and in the hallways to assist students in finding their classroom.
GRADE 1 students are asked to meet in the gym on the 7th or 8th when they arrive. All grade one teachers will be in the gym to welcome them and walk them to their respective classes once all students have arrived. Most of the students should find the gym with ease, but once again, there will be numerous staff throughout the school to direct all students.
Please understand that no parents are permitted to enter the school and need to stay off the school yard during school hours. Staff will be outdoors to welcome students and ensure they safely make it into the school and to their class.
In order to alleviate the traffic and congestion at dismissal, we will be continuing with the staggered dismissal process that we had in place last year. The schedule is as follows:
Kindergarten – 3:30 PM
Primary Classes – 3:35 PM
Junior Classes Inside the School – 3:40 PM
Junior Classes in the portables and Intermediate Students – 3:45 PM
Please note that only students whose parents are there to pick up at these times will be released. All other students will remain with the teacher until the end of the school day (3:45 PM).
At dismissal, if you are picking your child up from school by car, we ask that you use the Kiss ‘n’ Ride area and remain in your car. If picking up in person, please wait either on the path at the back of the school or on the sidewalk at the side of the building. Please ensure that you are physically distancing from other parents. Also be mindful that it may take a few minutes for your child’s class to come out of the school at dismissal as classes will be exiting the building in a staggered manner.
Access to student transportation schedules is now available through the Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) Parent Portal. Bus stop location and times can be found on the site. Once you have an account, you will need to add your student using their 9-digit Ontario Education Number (OEN).
Please note that as per the HCDSB Return to School Plan, a seating plan for the bus will be developed and implemented. Please remind your child to adhere to this protocol as it has been devised for every child’s safety. School bus transportation to and from school will be available beginning on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021.
*Note: If your child has not been assigned an OEN (ie. Kindergarten student) and is eligible for transportation, you would have received a phone call between August 23 – 27 providing you with the transportation schedule. If you did not receive this phone call, please contact HSTS. For Parent Portal instructions, please click here.
This school year, in an effort to minimize contacts and help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19, we are limiting visitor access to our school. All visitors, including parents and HCDSB staff who are not assigned to our school, will require approval and pre-screening before entering our building. Only visits that are deemed essential will be approved. Where possible, meetings or visits will be conducted virtually. Visitors who are granted approval will be required to complete an online screening form prior to arriving at our school. Once inside, all visitors will be required to wear masks.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we do all we can to ensure a safe and healthy return to school for all.
Unvaccinated children under the age of 12 are now exempt from federal quarantine if they travelled in the company of someone who qualified for an exemption from quarantine based on vaccination status. However, they may not attend school or childcare for 14 days after their arrival.
Students may also continue to attend school or childcare if their international travel was solely due to a cross border custody arrangement.
What happens if your child feels unwell at school?
It is important for your son or daughter to let their teacher know if they are feeling unwell at school.
Students who show signs/symptoms of COVID-19 during the school day will be taken to one of our school’s ‘isolation rooms’ and we will contact the parent or guardian to come and pick them up.
It is very important that we have current contact information for all of our families so that we can get in touch with you quickly. Please contact our school office if there have been any recent changes to your contact information.
Lunches for Elementary Students
For the health and safety of our students and school community, it is strongly recommended that all elementary students remain at school for the full duration of their lunch periods.
As we limit visitors to our school throughout the day, lunch drop offs will not be permitted during the school day unless it is an emergency situation.
Parents and guardians are asked to provide their child(ren) with lunch in the morning before students enter the school building.
Considerations for Lunch Prep:
- Lunches should be prepared as individual meals and snacks.
- Sharing food items will not be permitted.
- Reusable water bottles are encouraged.
Thank you for your understanding as we limit the number of visits and contacts to our school community to protect the health and safety of our students and staff.
Other Important Information
- Gym changerooms are closed to students; there is no need for gym clothes at this time.
- Parents are asked to communicate with teachers and office staff at the school by phone or email. Visitors to the school will be limited to essential and emergency visitors only.
- Kiss ‘n’ Ride drop-off in the morning will operate as usual with parents staying in their vehicle. We encourage students to walk to school if at all possible. Parents are not permitted on the school yard at any time. If walking your child to school and arriving through the greenspace at the back of the school, please know that the path is our schoolyard boundary. Thank you for respecting this boundary and not coming onto the school field or pavement!
- Please make every effort possible to support your child in arriving to school on time each morning. Late arrivals will have to sign-in, creating increased traffic in the foyer and office, which we want to limit.
- If you are bringing your child late or leaving early due to an appointment, please communicate with your child’s teacher and the office staff. You must wait outside the front doors when picking your child up early. Your child will be called down from their classroom once you arrive at the school.
