Family Day – February 15

A reminder that Monday, February 15th is a holiday. Please enjoy your time with your family!

Black History Month

As we are half-way through Black History Month, our students have been learning about and celebrating the many wonderful contributions made throughout history by Black Canadians and African Americans. They are also learning about racism and what it means to be an anti-racist.

Change to Learning Environment

On Tuesday, February 16th, the changes to the learning environment that were requested before Christmas will come into effect.

  • If you have not yet done so, please take a moment to verify the updated class placement for your child(ren) by visiting our Board website and clicking on our school name.
  • To access this information, you will need your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) – found on a recent report card.
  • If your child is returning to face-to-face learning and accessing busing through HSTS please confirm their bus route is accurate.
  • If your child is new to the virtual school placement, the virtual teacher will be in contact before Tuesday, February 16th so that your child will have access to the learning platform on Tuesday morning.

Next Opportunity to Request a Change in Learning Environment
As previously communicated, the next opportunity to request a change in your child’s learning environment is scheduled to take place in March. The online request form (survey) will be shared with all parents and guardians during the first week of March. The requested changes are planned to take effect before the end of March.

St. Andrew Family Kahoot Night

We are excited to tell you about our St. Andrew Family Kahoot Night that will be taking place on Thursday, February 25th. We hope that all of our St. Andrew families will join in on this fun trivia night. To learn more about this event sponsored by your School Council please download our flyer or visit our Feature Story for this event here:

Shrove Tuesday

The Tuesday before Lent begins is traditionally known as “Shrove Tuesday”. The term comes from the word “shrive” which means “absolve” in recognition of our need to repent the wrongs in our hearts. It is also a time to indulge one last time on our favourite foods before we begin our Lenten fasting. It is a tradition to use up the household fats to make pancakes and is often called “Pancake Tuesday” or “Mardi Gras – Fat Tuesday”.

Traditionally in St. Andrew School, we like to feast on pancakes together as a community. Due to Covid restrictions, we can’t do that this year. We ask that you feast on pancakes at home and please tweet out photos of your kids eating their pancakes. Please add @St_Andrew145 so they appear in our feed. You can also use the #PancakeTuesdayHCDSB

Ash Wednesday Liturgy

Our Grade 6 students will be leading us in our virtual Ash Wednesday liturgy at 11:00 AM. If you would like to attend, you can access the Teams Meeting Link here.

Please note that as per direction from the Diocese of Hamilton, no ashes will be distributed. We invite you to celebrate a liturgy at home using the resources from the diocese here:

The St. Andrew 2021 Cookbook…LAST CALL!

Thank you to all the families that have already submitted their delicious recipes for our cookbook!

We have extended the deadline for the recipes to March 1st so we look forward to receiving more!

We would appreciate receiving your family’s treasured recipe or your go to dinner recipe in a crunch, or your favorite on-line recipe, along with a photo of the yummy dish.  Please remember:

  • Recipes do NOT have to be original.  If your recipe is from another source (i.e. Allrecipes or the Food Network), just let us know.
  • Please include a photo of the dish if possible
  • We would love to include as many pictures of the students (and their families if they wish) in the cookbook by their recipe.
  • Please let us know the name and grade of your child for any photo submitted.

The goal is to compile as many recipes as we can for a cookbook which we hope to have available for sale in the spring.  Please send your recipes and photos to March 1, 2021.

Parish Update

We are happy to let you know that the Stations of the Cross will be live-streamed Friday evenings after the 7pm Mass from Feb-19 to Mar-26. To access, please see the link for all live-streamed Masses on our parish website at:

Dressing for the Weather

Please remember to send your children with warm clothing such as hats, mittens, boots, and snowpants. Even with the cold weather we will be going outside as much as possible, and we want our students to be dressed appropriately to enjoy the outdoors. As well, please remember to send indoor shoes if you haven’t already done so.

More information about the board’s inclement weather policy and how we make decisions about whether the children can go out or need to stay inside can be found on the board website here

Enhanced Safety Protocols – No Congregating Before or After School

Please help keep our community safe by following the specific direction about congregating before and after school in our enhanced safety protocols:

To help minimize the spread of COVID-19, we have received Ministry direction to continue to follow physical distancing measures both inside our schools and in outside areas. School staff will be monitoring to ensure that children are not gathering in groups before school starts and after school. Please review with your children about the need to follow physical distancing guidelines and remind your older children to refrain from congregating in groups before and after school.

As a reminder, parents are also asked not to gather during drop off and pick up times, and to refrain from carpooling if physical distancing and the use of PPE (masks) cannot be maintained.

We hope that we can count on your support and understanding in both following these protocols and responding positively to any reminders from staff to avoid congregating.
