Weekly Update November 30, 2020

The Lord is coming, always coming. When you have ears to hear and eyes to see, you will recognize him at any moment of your life. Life is Advent; life is recognizing the coming of the Lord.

Keeping Our School Community Safe

As you may know, Halton Region is in the Red Level (Control) of the Provincial COVID-19 Response Framework. It is strongly recommended that residents in the red control zone limit trips outside of their home:

  • Stay home, except for essential purposes such as going to work or school, buying essentials such as groceries, and attending medical appointments.
  • Maintain a physical distance of two metres (six feet) from those outside your household. Those that live alone may join one designated household.
  • Avoid all social gatherings such as play dates, birthday parties, and dinner parties with friends or family.

Thank You

Thank you for attending our Learning Conferences; it was wonderful connecting with you all. We greatly appreciate your support in celebrating your children’s accomplishments and planning next steps for growth!

Feast of St. Andrew

Monday, November 30th is the Feast Day of St. Andrew. We will celebrate with a virtual liturgy hosted by our Grade 7 students. During our Liturgy, we will also celebrate the coming of the First Week of Advent and light the first candle on our Advent Wreath.

International Day for People with Disabilities

Throughout the week, we will be participating in a variety of learning activities to raise awareness, and support the rights and significant contributions of persons with disabilities.

Scholastic Book Fair

Let’s continue to give our students access to the books they want to read! We will be having a Virtual Scholastic Book Fair beginning November 23rd through until December 4th. Plan to participate in our Virtual Family Event on November 25th from 6-8 PM and December 2nd from 6-8 PM. Find out how your family can join the fun HERE.

Your investment in your reader also helps our whole school. All purchases earn Rewards that can be redeemed for books and Education Resources for our school’s classrooms and library.

Community Engagement Event – Holiday Baking Together Apart!

We are excited to tell you about a fun Christmas event taking place this year. We have partnered with Cooksmart to bring the St. Andrew Community together virtually through an online Holiday Baking Event!

Families can register online to join the event. Together, following the direction of our virtual host, Kathy Stewart, we will all bake gingerbread cookies from the comfort of our own homes! Kathy will provide us with an easy-to-find list of ingredients in advance of our baking day. Then, on December 13th, from 1:00-3:00 we will all bake together via Zoom!

This event is being funded by our School Council, there is no cost to join other than the price of the ingredients. Space is limited, so register right away!

Change to Learning Environment Request Form Opens Monday, November 30

The board will be emailing all families an online request form on Monday, November 30th. If you wish to change your child(ren)’s learning environment from online to virtual, or vice versa, please watch for that email and complete the form.

Parish Updates

St. Vincent de Paul Angel Tree

Like last year, the major Christmas giving event for our school will be the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP).  The SSVP at Mary Mother of God serves 107 families and 151 children in need that live within our parish boundary

This Christmas more than ever our most vulnerable neighbours are in need. Together we can make a big difference by sharing our Christmas to bring some joy into their homes.  For many of these families your donation may be the only gift they receive.

We are asking the students and families to support these neighbours in two ways:

  1. Monetary Online Donation
  2. Canada Helps – https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/society-of-st-vincent-de-paul-mary-mother-of-god-parish/
  3. Monetary donations will all be used to bulk purchase gift cards from Wal-Mart for the families.
  • Please add a special daily prayer of protection for all of the families SSVP serves:

Mary Mother of God, be their protector and defender.  Bring their needs before our Father, and give them the grace to conquer every danger and overcome all that would threaten their health and well-being.  Amen.

Advent Resources for Families

Advent comes from the Latin word which means “coming.” Jesus is coming, both into a manger and into our hearts anew. While we typically think of Advent as a joyous season, it is also meant to be a period of quiet preparation: as we await His arrival with great anticipation…

How can we prepare our hearts and home for the coming of Christ? We’ve got a few suggestions on this page that will help you keep the season sacred.

Peace Light Distribution Canceled

Sadly, the Peace Light event that was scheduled at Mary Mother of God parish is cancelled. The Diocesan protocols have changed, and no events are allowed beyond the sacraments at this time.

HCDSB Website Redesign

Our School Board is in the process of redesigning the HCDSB website and are looking for feedback from staff, students, parents and members of our HCDSB community to help them better understand the ways in which they can improve their current website.

Share Your Experiences with our Current Website

Please take a few minutes to share your experiences with our current website (www.hcdsb.org) and provide suggestions for improving our site.
