Weekly Update November 16, 2020

Every thought you produce, anything you say, any action you do, it bears your signature. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Late Arrivals

Due to the drastically increasing number of Covid-19 cases, the Public Health Department has asked that we be especially diligent at not allowing students from different classes to mix.

As part of our Safe Arrival Program, teachers take attendance in their classrooms beginning at 9:00 AM. Any student who is not sitting in the class at 9:00 AM may be marked absent. Therefore, when children arrive late, they must first come to the office so that we can change their code to “present”. Due to the large number of late arrivals, we are getting long line ups in the front foyer and students from different classes are mixing.

Beginning Monday, to avoid the students mixing, all students arriving after the bell at 9:00 AM will be asked to wait outside in front of the school. We will call students in one at a time to mark them as present.

After 9:00 AM, we don’t have any staff on supervision, so we ask that if you are dropping your child off after 9:00 AM that you wait with your child until they are called into the school by our office staff.

We will have markers on the ground for students to line up on to ensure that they are maintaining a social distance.

Lockers

Despite a lovely respite, the colder weather is definitely upon us. The Board has given us permission to assign the students lockers and we will begin using them on Monday. Please note that we will have very specific protocols for locker usage:

  • No student is permitted to put a lock on their locker
  • Lockers will be used for outerwear only (boots, snow pants, mittens, hats, gloves)
  • Students will not be permitted to keep personal belongings in their lockers other than their outerwear – this is to avoid the need to make repeated visits to the locker and to shorten the time spent at the lockers
  • Teachers will stagger the times students are sent to the lockers to retrieve their outerwear in order to avoid congregating in the hallways

Remembrance Day

Thank you to our Grade 3 students and their teachers for the beautiful Remembrance Day Liturgy. If you would like to see it, you can watch it here!

St. Vincent de Paul Angel Tree

Like last year, the major Christmas giving event for our school will be the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP).  The SSVP at Mary Mother of God serves 107 families and 151 children in need that live within our parish boundary

This Christmas more than ever our most vulnerable neighbours are in need. Together we can make a big difference by sharing our Christmas to bring some joy into their homes.  For many of these families your donation may be the only gift they receive.

We are asking the students and families to support these neighbours in two ways:

  1. Monetary Online Donation
  2. Canada Helps – https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/society-of-st-vincent-de-paul-mary-mother-of-god-parish/
  3. Monetary donations will all be used to bulk purchase gift cards from Wal-Mart for the families.
  • Please add a special daily prayer of protection for all of the families SSVP serves:

Mary Mother of God, be their protector and defender.  Bring their needs before our Father, and give them the grace to conquer every danger and overcome all that would threaten their health and well-being.  Amen.

Peace Light from Bethlehem

This year, our Youth Group will be bringing the PEACE LIGHT FROM BETHLEHEM to Halton Region. The Peace Light is a flame that originated in the grotto of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem where it has burned uninterrupted for more than 1,000 years. Each year it is passed around the world, not unlike the Olympic torch. Everyone is welcome to light a flame from the Peace Light to bring home and enjoy, and  share with others.
The Peace Light will be available to the public to light a flame on Saturday, December 12th from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm at KelyNack Stables: 6391 Walkers Line, Burlington, ON L7M 0P7 (approx. 20 minutes from Mary Mother of God Parish).

If you are unable to join us at the barn, we will have two additional dates for you to collect the flame from ary Mother of God Parish:

Saturday, December 19th from 6:15 until 8:00 pm
Sunday, December 20th from 12:30 until 2:00 pm.
