At the January 21st Board Meeting, the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) Board of Trustees considered a motion to expand the French Immersion Program beginning in the 2020-21 school year. Trustees deferred making a decision until the February 18, 2020 Board Meeting, in order to allow time to share this information with all parents who may be impacted by this expansion.
The option to expand the French Immersion program, if approved, will require system-wide boundary reviews next year, which may impact many HCDSB students and families.
How Would This Affect Your Child and Family?
Student enrolment into the French Immersion Program in Grade 1 is currently limited to two (2) classes per designated school. The option for expansion would add two (2) more Grade 1 French Immersion classes per designated school. While this is possible for the 2020-21 school year, a long-term solution to the expansion of the French Immersion Program will be needed.
This would mean:
- Boundary reviews that will involve all elementary schools in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville.
- Possible changes to the current elementary school boundaries for all students (not only students registered in the French Immersion Program).
- Specialized programs may be moved to other schools.
