Orange Shirt Day
On Friday, we celebrated Orange Shirt Day. This day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the harm caused to our Indigenous brothers and sisters by the Residential School System. Together, we stood in solidarity as a community in the spirit of reconciliation and hope to say that #EveryChildMatters. http://www.orangeshirtday.org/
To commemorate this day, two of our families donated a very special gift to our library. Zoe, Carson, and Natalie donated the Canadian Geographic Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada and a copy of The Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire.
We had a fire drill on Friday and it went very well. The children responded swiftly and safely, exiting the building in an orderly fashion. We will have another fire drill within the next two weeks.
School Council Meeting
We will have our first Catholic School Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd in the library at 6:30 PM. This meeting will include a commissioning ceremony for our new School Council for the 2018-19 school year. Parents who submitted a nomination form have been notified of their position on council. For more information about our School Council please visit: https://elem.hcdsb.org/standrew/2018/09/introducing-your-new-school-council/
All parents and guardians are welcome to attend our School Council meetings.
We will be having a Thanksgiving Liturgy on Thursday, October 4th at 1:00 in the gymnasium hosted by our Grade 4 students. Parents and Guardians are welcome to attend. All of our students have been learning what it means to be Responsible Citizens; after our liturgy, we will be awarding one recipient from each grade with our Responsible Citizenship Award.
PA Day & Thanksgiving Holiday
Please note that Friday, October 5th is a Professional Activity Day. There will be no school for students on this date. We would also like to remind our parents that next Monday, October 8th, is the Thanksgiving Holiday. We wish all our families a blessed Thanksgiving.
Milk and Special Lunch Programs
Our milk program will begin on Monday for those who have ordered milk. Our first Pizza Day will be on Friday, October 12th. LunchBox Orders will also be available again this year; more information will be coming home in the next two weeks about this program.
Thank you to all our parent volunteers who give of their time to ensure these programs run consistently for our students and families. If you would like to volunteer for our Treat Lunch Days or any other events in our school, please complete the blue Volunteer Form that came home last week or register online to be a volunteer.
Girls Inc is one of the local community organizations in the Halton Region. The goal for Girls Inc. is to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold through the programs and the mentoring relationships the facilitators develop for the program participants. In the Fall we will be running a Girls Inc. of Halton program, Media Smarts, beginning in October for Grade 7 girls during the lunch break, once a week. In the program, girls will learn to critically analyze messages in the media and they will learn about the effects of media messages on girls and women.
Our new Elementary School Liaison Officer, Constable Dawn Freeland, will be working with our Grade 6 and 7 classes beginning the week of October 8th through the BRAVO (Building Respect, Attitudes and Values with Others) Program.
