Weekly Update May 28, 2018

The mystery of the blessed Trinity invites us to live in communion with one another, in love and sharing; certain that wherever there is love, there is God. ~ Pope Francis

Goodbye and God Bless

Each year at this time we have to say goodbye to those who are leaving St Andrew to share their gifts and talents in other communities. We have enjoyed much laughter, much joy and much love with you here at St Andrew and we wish you every blessing as you heed God’s calling and serve where He leads you. We have been enriched by your presence here at our school and you will be greatly missed!  May God bless you abundantly as you continue your journey in Catholic Education.

At this time, we also say goodbye to the following staff members:

This year, we say goodbye to our wonderful Vice Principal Mrs Kelly Williams as she takes on the role of Vice Principal at St Nicholas Catholic School in Oakville. We wish you every blessing as the community of St Nicholas welcomes you to your new home.

~Mrs Lesley Degenhardt will be moving on to the SERT role at Assumption High School

~ Mr Mario Mulé, Mr Chris Hundt, Mrs Isabel Mascarenhas, and Mr Vince Enright will be retiring this year. We wish them all the best as they move onto a new chapter in their lives and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for the many years they served in Catholic Education.

Welcome to St Andrew

We are delighted to welcome our new Vice Principal, Mrs Michelle Kotulak, who joins us from St Anthony of Padua. Mrs Kotulak brings a wealth of experience in Education both as a teacher and as an administrator and we are looking forward to having her join us at St Andrew.

Annual School BBQ

Please join us on Thursday, May 31st  at 5:30 pm as we celebrate another fantastic year at St Andrew. There will be games and events for all the children at the school. As with all volunteer-run events, more volunteers mean a smoother running event. Thank you to our many community partners, parents, staff and student volunteers who are making this all possible! The Raffle Baskets look AMAZING!

Families who have pre-ordered play-all-day wristbands, treat tickets, raffle tickets, and meal tickets will be receiving them on Wednesday.

Professional Activity Day

Please be advised that Friday, June 1st is a scheduled PA Day. Staff will be involved in assessment and evaluation activities. There will be no school for students on this day.

Closing School Mass

As we leave for the summer, we take time to thank God for the gift of Catholic Education, and for the wonderful school year, we have spent together as a community at St Andrew. Our final school mass will be taking place on June 14, 2018, at Mary Mother of God Parish at 10:00 am. We will be celebrating the Eucharist in honour of our graduating students. Please join us in praying for our young people as they leave us and take the next step in their faith journey.

Grade Eight Graduation

Our wonderful Grade 8’s will be graduating from St Andrew on Friday, June 22nd at 7:00 pm. The ceremony will be followed by a dance in the gymnasium. Pick up will be at 10:45 pm. Parents of our graduates are reminded to watch for communication coming home about the Graduation Ceremony and events leading up to this special occasion.

St Andrew Play Day

On Tuesday, June 12th our students in Grades 1 – 8 will participate in outdoor sports and games for the morning.  Please remind your children to wear hats, bring water bottles and use lots of sunscreen to ensure an enjoyable day for all!

St Andrew Talent Show

Preparations for our school Talent Show are in full swing! Auditions for all grades are being held the weeks of May 28th and June 4th. A variety of acts and talents from various grades 1 – 8 will be featured. The talent show will be presented in the school gymnasium on Tuesday, June 26 beginning at 9:00 am. Parents are welcome to attend. The talent show is always a school favourite and we have no doubt that this year’s show will be a winner!

Sunny Days

Sun Protection – With the warm, beautiful days of spring and summer approaching, parents need to be aware of, and take action to prevent damage from the sun’s rays to your child(ren)’s skin. Students are outside for two separate 15-minute recess breaks and a 40-minute lunch recess break each day. Please assist us in keeping your children safe and healthy by ensuring your children wear appropriate clothing, including close-toed shoes, a hat and sunblock. Our staff cannot apply sunblock on to your children.

Dress Code – With the warmer weather upon us, we remind students that they are expected to dress in a manner appropriate for a learning setting; i.e. we do not dress for the beach at school. We ask that students not wear: tank tops, muscle shirts, halter tops, or very short shorts; no undergarments should be showing. Students are running and playing at recess and during physical education. The clothing they are wearing should allow free and flexible movement with comfort, and their footwear should not fall off and should be close-toed. Students are reminded that their clothing should represent the values we aspire to as Catholic students, offensive language or images are not appropriate on school premises. If your child is wearing clothing that is not appropriate for the school learning environment, they will be given something else to wear, or alternatively, a call home will be made to make arrangements for your child to change. We thank parents and students for cooperating with our school dress code.

Personal Electronic Devices

Digital Citizenship – We would like to remind our students and families of the policies around the acceptable use of personal electronic devices on school premises. Students who bring a cell phone or any personal electronic device to school must demonstrate digital citizenship through the appropriate use of technology, as outlined in our school Code of Conduct. They must use board technology for curriculum-related/educational purposes only. Lastly, in order to maintain the order and safety of our students, they are to use the office phone to contact parents during the instructional day, with permission from the teacher.

Social Media Fitness Presentation – Our Catholic School Council is pleased to announce that renowned speaker and recognized educator, Chris Vollum, will be presenting to our Grade 4 – 8 students on the healthy use of social media. There will be two presentations, one for our Junior students, and one for our Intermediate students. Parents are welcome to attend!

Eco Update

Bike to School Week begins this week at St Andrew School. Staff and students are encouraged to make the environmentally friendly decision to bike to school during this week. Please share your pictures on social media using #biketoschoolHCDSB#biketoschool#bikemonthHCDSB

St. Andrew Greening Our Eco team will be mulching and Grade 3 Science classes have already begun gardening at the front of the school. Special thanks to Oakville Green for providing our school with mulch and perennials. Their support and guidance for all of our Eco initiatives is much appreciated!

Textbooks and Library Books

Parents, we ask that you continue to check closets, trunks, under beds, etc. for any school books that may be hiding and return them to us as soon as possible. The more we receive back, the fewer we have to replace. By working together to locate missing textbooks and library books, we are able to responsibly minimize costs to the school. If a book belonging to the school has been damaged or lost, please contact your child’s teacher and he/she will assist you in determining the replacement cost.  All books are due back June 8th, 2018 so that we can conduct an inventory and make purchases for the new school year.
