To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
As we begin the month of October, we look forward to cooler days, the changing colours of the fall season and we take time to reflect upon all that we are thankful for in our lives. As we settle into this new school year, we look forward to all that this month holds in store for our SHOJ community.
September 30th National Day for Truth and Reconciliation SHOJ Liturgy
On September 30th, the first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our SHOJ community took time to learn, reflect, and pray as we remembered all of those impacted by the residential school system from our Indigenous communities. We also installed a new orange banner. The seven feathers on the orange crosswalk hold a special significance, representing the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers which has always been important to Indigenous people along with the belief that all forms of life are equally important. Please follow the link to view our school liturgy which begins with a Land Acknowledgement, a video to explain the day, songs, prayers, and a message from Mr. Susi. https://youtu.be/1MykrWjlSg8
Terry Fox Walk/Run: Thursday, October 7th (Weather Permitting)
SHOJ staff and students are excited to participate in the annual Terry Fox Walk/Run. As last year, it will be a socially distanced walk/run with each class participating at a scheduled time throughout the day. Students are asked to bring in a “Toonie for Terry” or another amount by Thursday, October 7th. Our classes will also be participating in a virtual presentation through Teams, with Fred Fox, the brother of Terry! A reminder that October 7th is a non-uniform day for students who wear Red and White. Thank you to our grade 8 French class for leading the day!
October is the month of the Rosary
The month of October is dedicated to the holy rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. October includes the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7th). This powerful prayer has been a source of comfort for Catholics for centuries. During the month of October we encourage you to pray the Rosary as a family. Our students and staff will be participating in reciting a decade of the rosary together, in Teams, weekly throughout the month.

Catholic School Council Meeting: Thursday, October 7th, 2021
This is a reminder that parents are invited to consider a position on the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School Council. We are looking for Parent Representatives. The school council is an advisory group and meets with the Principal 4-5 times a year. School Council provides feedback and input on school related matters and finances and helps to plan special school events and fundraising activities. This is a great way for parents to be involved!
You may visit the HCDSB website for more information on the role of school councils at https://www.hcdsb.org/parents/catholic-school-councils/
Our first School Council meeting will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021 on Microsoft Teams at 6:30 p.m.
If you are interested in being an official School Council member, please email Mr. Susi at email@example.com by Monday, October 4, 2021.
