NEW UPDATES

Remote Learning to Continue for the Remainder of the School Year

The Premier of Ontario announced that all Ontario elementary and secondary schools will remain closed for in-person learning for the rest of the school year. See the Press Release here.

What Does This Mean?

  • Elementary and secondary students will continue to learn remotely until the end of June.
  • Students with special education needs who cannot be accommodated through remote learning will continue to receive in-person support during the extended remote learning period.
  • Child care centres will remain OPEN.
  • All Before and After School Programs will remain CLOSED.

The news that schools will remain closed until the end of June will likely raise a number of questions regarding access to schools to pick up personal belongings, report card distribution, etc. We will be sharing more information regarding these matters as well as possible school organized grade gatherings over the coming days.

Updates

HCDSB will continue to provide updates as they become available, and will share information in the following ways:

HCDSB Mental Health leadership team have developed a number of resources to support students and families and they are posted on our website at: https://www.hcdsb.org/students/mental-health-well-being/

Pride Month

We Are All Wonderfully Made

Upcoming School & System Recognition Days

Monday, June 14th
We will hold a system-wide Pride Awareness Day – a day to reaffirm our commitment to honour the dignity and worth of each member of our community by nurturing safe, welcoming and inclusive schools where all students can feel a true sense of belonging.

SHOJ students are again encouraged to show their support by dressing brightly in rainbow colours or dress completely in one of the colours of the rainbow!

There will be a school liturgy that day recognizing Pride Awareness and linking to an observation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Feast Day is June 11th). These will be recognized together in this liturgy. As noted in the Board’s email to parents on Pride month, “June is the month traditionally devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which for Catholics is a sign and symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity.”

 SHOJ Student Poet Honoured

Congratulations to Mikaela Pereira, Gr. 8, whose poem received honourary recognition in this year’s ALPHA Voices of Hope, Creative Voice Contest.

The theme was Bias, discrimination, hate cause racism and divide us. Race does not and should not. What do you want the world you live in and the future to look like? The contest was open to youth ages 12-22 who wish to inspire positive race relations.

Mikaela’s powerful poem, “The Painted Wall,” is linked below.

Congratulations Mikaela!

School Bus Courtesy Seat Application Process on Hold

Each year, in accordance with HSTS Procedure HS-1-004 – Courtesy Seats, families with children who are not otherwise eligible for school bus transportation to and from school are allowed to apply for courtesy seats on school buses.

Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) will not be able to accommodate courtesy seats as we move into the 2021-2022 school year. However, as information becomes available from public health, this decision may be reconsidered, and we will communicate any changes.

As a result, the courtesy seat application process is on HOLD for the 2021-2022 school year. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

For more information about student transportation services in Halton, visit the HSTS website at: www.haltonbus.ca/

Parents of Students with Medical Conditions

This year, copies of the Student Plan of Care for any students with medical conditions (anaphylaxis, asthma, heart conditions, seizure conditions, diabetes, etc.) will come home via email in June. Please review and update the plan if needed and return to school the week prior to school starting in September with any medications associated with the condition.

If your child has a change in their condition over the summer, please inform the school in the week prior to students returning.

McCarthy’s Uniform Purchasing

Our school uniform provider, McCarthy Uniforms, has three enhanced options for shopping:  Click here for information on updated school e-stores, private appointments and a web-supported call-center.

Families are encouraged to shop early and utilize these alternative channels to avoid late-August line ups. Long wait times will be the reality this year, given that McCarthy’s must adhere to strict social distancing measures and simply can’t accept normal in-store volumes. In some cases, only five customers will be permitted in stores at any one time.

McCarthy’s has informed us that to support families during this time they have implemented an installment payment program (online only), introduced volume discount buying options and invested in a variety of web support tools to make online shopping easy & fast!  All school uniform products can be exchanged for up to a year and returned until September.

Moving for September?

If any families are moving and their child(ren) will not be attending SHOJ next year, please inform Mrs. Gleeson via email (GleesonK@hcdsb.org) at the office as soon as possible.
