Weekly Update: May 31st-June 4th

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Traditionally, June is the month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which for Catholics is a sign and symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity. We observe the feast day dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, June 11th and will celebrate during a liturgy on Monday, June 14th.

NEW UPDATES

Pride Month

The month of June is designated as Pride Month in Canada, which for the 2SLGBTQ+ members in our community is a sign and symbol of love and inclusion.

Drawing on the example of Christ, who preached a message of love and inclusion throughout His ministry, our Catholic schools are called to ensure we are nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments, where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected.

As Catholics, we believe that we are all made in the image and likeness of a God who created us and loves us unconditionally – just as we are. We are called to know, love and celebrate one another, just as God knows, loves and celebrates each one of us because we are “wonderfully made.” We honour the inherent dignity in each other by treating one another with sensitivity, compassion and respect.

Throughout the month of June, HCDSB schools will be raising awareness around Pride Month and will journey with the 2SLGBTQ+ community in creating spaces of welcome in a search of dignity and justice for all. We ask for God’s grace as we continue to proclaim the Good News in our schools and across our community.

Upcoming School & System Recognition Days

Tuesday, June 1st
We will launch Pride Month with HCDSB Rainbow Daya day to love one another and celebrate our differences, just as God loves and celebrates each one of us because we are all “wonderfully made.” SHOJ students are encouraged to show their support by dressing brightly in rainbow colours or dress completely in one of the colours of the rainbow!

Monday, June 14th
We will hold a system-wide Pride Awareness Day – a day to reaffirm our commitment to honour the dignity and worth of each member of our community by nurturing safe, welcoming and inclusive schools where all students can feel a true sense of belonging.

SHOJ students are again encouraged to show their support by dressing brightly in rainbow colours or dress completely in one of the colours of the rainbow!

There will be a school liturgy that day celebrating Pride Awareness and linking to a celebration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Feast Day is June 11th). These will be celebrated together in this liturgy. As noted in the Board’s email to parents on Pride month, “June is the month traditionally devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which for Catholics is a sign and symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity.”

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

A novena is an ancient form of prayer in the Catholic tradition consisting of nine consecutive days of prayer leading up to a particular feast day where a particular blessing or grace is sought. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the celebration of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are part of our longstanding tradition in the Church.

National Indigenous History Month

June is also National Indigenous History Month in Canada, and HCDSB will be celebrating and honouring the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in our country, and in our HCDSB community.

National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

For more information on Indigenous History Month, and to see what’s happening across our board, please visit the HCDSB website.

Halton Public Health Booking Vaccination Appointments for 12+

The Provincial government announced a plan to vaccinate youth 12 to 17 years of age starting May 23rd through the provincial booking system or through select pharmacies.

Halton residents aged 12 to 17 will be able to book their vaccine appointments through the Youth Vaccination Program starting May 31, 2021. Halton Region, in partnership with local school boards, are committed to following Provincial direction to offer first doses to all 12 to17 year olds in June, and the second doses by the end of August.

Appointments will be available at Halton COVID-19 community clinic locations administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Parents of Students with Medical Conditions

This year, copies of the Student Plan of Care for any students with medical conditions (anaphylaxis, asthma, heart conditions, seizure conditions, diabetes, etc.) will come home via email in June. Please review and update the plan if needed and return to school the week prior to school starting in September with any medications associated with the condition.

If your child has a change in their condition over the summer, please inform the school in the week prior to students returning.

McCarthy’s Uniform Purchasing

Our school uniform provider, McCarthy Uniforms, has three enhanced options for shopping:  Click here for information on updated school e-stores, private appointments and a web-supported call-center.

Families are encouraged to shop early and utilize these alternative channels to avoid late-August line ups. Long wait times will be the reality this year, given that McCarthy’s must adhere to strict social distancing measures and simply can’t accept normal in-store volumes. In some cases, only five customers will be permitted in stores at any one time.

McCarthy’s has informed us that to support families during this time they have implemented an installment payment program (online only), introduced volume discount buying options and invested in a variety of web support tools to make online shopping easy & fast!  All school uniform products can be exchanged for up to a year and returned until September.

PA Day – Friday, June 4th

A reminder for parents that this Friday, June 4th is a PA Day. There will be no school for students.
