Weekly Update: November 30th-December 4th

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the midst of our hurry, as we prepare for Christmas, the Holy Season of Advent calls to us. This call to God’s people reminds us to slow down and wait “in joyful hope” as we do what we can to prepare for Christ’s coming. The word itself, Advent means coming or arrival. Advent is a time of preparation, a time to get our spiritual houses ready for the coming of Christ, anticipating his second coming and actively remembering his first coming to earth as a baby. Advent is a time of desire, longing and expectancy.

Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrating the season of Advent with many special activities!

  • Monday, December 7th – Second Week of Advent Prayer – Video from Fr. Ed and Candle Lighting – Microsoft Teams
  • Monday, December 14th – Third Week of Advent Prayer – Video from Fr. Ed and Candle Lighting – Microsoft Teams
  • Wednesday, December 16thAdvent Liturgy at 1:30 p.m. on Microsoft Teams led by Mrs. Wolfendale and Mrs. Messom’s Gr. 2 and 2/3 classes. This will be posted on our school’s YouTube channel later in the day. The link will be emailed to families.
  • Friday, December 18th Christmas Sweater/Red & Green Spirit Day (non-uniform day). There will be a Virtual Christmas Holiday Cheer Assembly for all students and staff in the morning at 10:30 a.m. Parents are reminded that there will be an early dismissal at 2:10 p.m.

Pep Rally & Danceathon Fundraiser Totals

Thank you very much to our school community for your generous support of our annual Halloween Danceathon fundraiser. We announced our totals and prize winners at our virtual Pep Rally last Wednesday. Collectively we raised $17,217.00 which far surpassed our goal! This money will be used towards the purchase of items such as: Religious articles and displays for our school, laptops, Smart Board projectors, gym and recess play equipment, classroom games and learning materials.

Mr. Susi and Mr. Cochrane were so excited to share the news with the students that they took the Pep Rally “on the road” and through the hallways of SHOJ. It was amazing to see the excited classes in real time!

Congratulations to our top three classes who raised the most money per capita who won a special classroom celebration; Mrs. Leone & Mrs. Button $59.00 (Kindergarten); Mrs. Messom $58 (Gr. 2/3); and Mrs. Humphries & Mme Inch $49 (Gr. 2 French Immersion). Congratulations as well to Mr Cazes’ Gr. 7/8 French Immersion class and Mrs. Humphries & Mme Inch’s class who won 100% classroom participation prizes!

Also, congratulations to our student prize winners: Bruce B. in Mrs. Vukovoc’s Gr. 4 class, Abby M. in Mrs. Wolfendale’s Gr. 2 class, and Alexis K. in Mrs. Tallevi’s Gr. 3 French Immersion class. Keeping Our School Community Healthy & Safe

As you may know, Halton Region is in the Red Level (Control) of the Provincial COVID-19 Response Framework. It is strongly recommended that residents in the red control zone limit trips outside of their home:

Christmas Hamper Program

We are continuing with our annual school Christmas Hamper donations to support families who are part of the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. In the past, our wonderful SHOJ families have been so generous as we support 50 families and we make a positive difference in their lives at Christmas!

This year, due to Covid-19, our collection will look differently at the request of the CCAS, however we still anticipate making the same amazing impact!

We need your help! As a Catholic Faith community, we will join together in this worthwhile cause!

  • All monetary donations will be made through School Cash Online. Parents may pay here in set donation amounts of $10, $20, $30 or a combination of each. All collected money will go to the CCAS who will use this money to purchase appropriate gift cards for our fifty sponsored families.
  • We have been asked to collect cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. Please send these to school with your child who may place these in a bin located in each classroom.
  • The deadline for all donations is Friday, December 11th, 2020.

Many thanks, and may God bless you and your family!
