Bullying Prevention and Awareness Parent Resources

November 15th – 21st was Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week in Ontario. SHOJ students and school staff work together to explore bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being in order to maintain a healthy, safe, and inclusive learning environment.

See links below for some online resources for families.

SafeArrival Reminder

Please note that all student absences must be reported using the SafeArrival System. An agenda note or Remind App message to teacher is not sufficient notification of student absence.

School Cash Online

As you know, we have made several modifications to how we operate to mitigate the risk of COVID-19. As part of those modifications, we ask you to use our online payment system to purchase school items when possible.

Here at SHOJ, approximately 90% of our families are using School Cash Online! Cash can play a significant role in virus transmission, and we are working toward following the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations to use contactless payments to mitigate virus spread.

Click here for instructions on how to set up your School Cash Online account.

Thank you in advance for helping us implement processes, like paying online, to keep everyone safe.

Winter Weather

Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. All students should wear boots, hats, gloves or mittens, warm coats and scarves. All students will be going outside during the recess and lunch periods, except when the weather is extremely cold and we keep all students indoors (*See below). Playing outdoors is a pleasant and healthy activity when students are wearing suitable clothing.

With winter approaching all students should by now have a pair of “indoor shoes”. These extra shoes serve many functions, safety being the primary one. Students will be more comfortable when wearing dry shoes in the classroom and therefore more able to concentrate on academics.

We have been given direction from the Public Health Department and the HCDSB to begin using student lockers for outdoor clothing only (boots, coats, snow pants). Teachers will have a routine in place so that students may access these lockers and still maintain social distancing in the hallways.

Inclement Weather Procedure

Extreme Cold: Temperature with or without wind chill

a) warmer than -15°C: students may remain outside for all regular outside activities

b) between -15° and -20°C: students may remain outside for no longer than 20 minute intervals at a time

c) colder than -20°C: students must remain inside

Keeping Christ in Christmas Student Contest

With Christmas just around the corner, the Halton Catholic District School Board will once again be running its Keeping Christ in Christmas student contest! This year, the contest will be open for entries from October 28th through November 25th, 2020.

Students are asked to submit work that best describes the theme of the contest, Keeping Christ in Christmas, and highlight in their individual submissions how we can all do our part to Keep Christ in Christmas.

To minimize the distribution of paper and for the health and safety of our students, staff and school communities, the Board will be accepting submissions ONLINE ONLY this year. Student work can be entered into the contest through an online form available on the official contest page.

Click here for more information about the HCDSB contest.

A message from the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) at St Paul’s

The CWL Christmas Bazaar at St Paul the Apostle Parish is a tradition and favorite for many in Halton to kick-off the advent season, and we’ve gone virtual!  Please tell your friends and join us as our community needs your support.  With 100% of all proceeds going towards local charities, help us to support and spread Christmas cheer to others in our community!

Featuring 75+ Auction Items, our popular Toonie Tree, and Wine Basket Raffles, there is sure to be something for everyone!

The Auction begins on November 20th and closes at 5 p.m. on Friday November 27th.

Christmas Hamper Program

We are beginning our annual Christmas support program for the Hamilton Catholic Children’s Aid Society. The grade 8’s build on their Focus on Faith theme of Solidarity and lead this school-wide initiative. As we have in the past, the tremendous support and generosity of the entire Sacred Heart of Jesus community helps over 50 needy families at Christmas.

Communication will come early this week about our process this year.

New School Uniform Supplier for HCDSB Schools

The contract with our current school uniform supplier, ISW (InSchoolwear Inc.) will soon expire. The new contract was awarded to McCarthy Uniforms, which will be the sole uniform supplier for HCDSB schools commencing February 1, 2021.

  • Students may continue to wear ISW uniform pieces beyond February 1st and until they and/or younger siblings outgrow the items of clothing.
  • Uniform items previously purchased from ISW will still qualify for the end of year uniform exchange program.
