Weekly Update for January 10

Congratulations and Thank You for a Wonderful First Few Days Online!

  • We are so proud of our students and staff for adapting so smoothly to learning online again, and we are so grateful for the support from our families in making it happen. Thank you for everything you’ve done this week to keep the learning going!
  • At the Ministry of Education’s direction, we will be learning online together until January 17. (For more information about the announcement, please see our website here.) The students have made great strides in learning how to use our technology, and also in making sure that they are treating others with respect in our online Catholic community. You can help by reviewing expectations with them using our Distance and Digital Learning Code of Conduct and modeling positive online behaviours yourselves. For example, please remind your children that even private chats aren’t private in our online platforms, that our communications with one another should be appropriate at all times, and that no one should be taking or sharing pictures of the online class without permission.
  • Following Halton Public Health’s direction about monitoring for symptoms and isolating as needed, as well as remembering to practice mask wearing, proper hand hygiene, and distancing, will help to keep our community safe and hopefully get us back in the building on schedule!

Physical Education While Learning Online

  • As much as possible, and while respecting individual student needs, family circumstances, and the cycle of instruction, students will be learning across all areas of the curriculum, including Health and Physical Education, while online. As educators plan instruction for the next week, please review the information in the attachment about how to prepare your child and the learning environment so that he or she can participate in phys ed successfully and safely while at home.

Attendance While Learning Online

  • During this period of remote learning, we continue to promote regular attendance, as it is important for students to remain engaged in their learning and feel connected to their peers while our school building is closed.
  • Attendance will be taken twice daily: once in the morning and again after lunch. If your child is not able to attend or participate in remote learning on any given day, please report his or her absence, as you typically would during in-person learning, through the SchoolMessenger Safe Arrival System:  https://www.hcdsb.org/parents/report-your-childs-absence/.
  • Our communication with one another during this time is particularly important, and we appreciate your patience as we check our absences daily. As you know, we will contact you through SchoolMessenger if your child is marked absent without a reason, and we will also make the necessary changes if you or the educator reports that your child has been marked absent when he or she is in class. If that has happened, and you need to let us know, please call the office and leave a message on the attendance voicemail, or email Mrs. Lupton at luptonn@hcdsb.org, and we will make the necessary changes.

Catholic School Council Meeting Monday

  • Our next Catholic School Council Meeting will be on Monday, January 10 at 6:30 pm, and it will be conducted virtually. If you would like to attend the meeting please email Mrs. Dore-Anderson at dorer@hcdsb.org.

Change to Learning Environment Form Now Open – Closes Friday

  • In response to the Province’s temporary move to Step 2 of the Roadmap to Reopening in order to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, the HCDSB has revised its original 2021-2022 Return to School Plan to provide greater flexibility for families. We will now offer two (2) opportunities for families to request a change to learning environment for elementary students.
  • The form to request a change from in-person to online learning or vice versa is now open until Friday, January 14 at 11:59 pm and can be accessed at the link below. The requested change will come into effect on January 24, or once schools reopen for in-person instruction if the period of remote learning is extended.
  • For more information about the process, including the timelines around the second opportunity to change your child’s learning environment, please see our school website here: https://elem.hcdsb.org/ourladyofpeace/2022/01/change-to-learning-environment-for-elementary-students-request-form-now-open/
