Curriculum Night – Thank you!

We would like to thank all our parents/guardians who were able to join us for our Virtual Curriculum Night. It was wonderful to connect with families virtually.  We appreciate our partnership as we continue to work together to build a safe, supportive, and inclusive school community that encourages our students to achieve, believe, and belong.

Looking Ahead…

Hallowe’en is around the corner! We are so excited to be hosting our Halloween Dance-a-thon this year.  We will be doing it outside on the blacktop on Wednesday, October 27th.  Rain dates set for Thursday or Friday.

On the day of the dance-a-thon, students are encouraged to wear orange and black.

On Friday, October 29, students can wear a Halloween costume!

Hallowe’en Costume Selection:

The Halton Catholic District School Board is committed to creating and supporting a positive climate in each of our school communities, that fosters and promotes equity, inclusivity and celebrates diversity.  Halloween is a great time to dress up and have fun with costumes. There are endless possibilities for what children (and adults) can be for Halloween. A clown, a crime-fighting cartoon puppy, a banana, a giant hot dog, a Minecraft character, a velociraptor. However, another person’s culture should never be our costume.

In our Catholic education community, we want to promote respect, inclusion and empathy for all individuals. As you select a Halloween costume this year, we encourage you to talk to your children about becoming critical thinkers and social justice champions in all aspects of their lives.

The following are suggested questions to reflect on with your child when choosing a costume.  Your conversations at home on this topic directly help to support our school’s efforts to create and maintain an equitable and inclusive learning environment:

  • Is my costume making fun of a group of people, their culture or religion?
  • Does my costume reinforce jokes and stereotypes about certain groups, cultures or religions?
  • Am I altering my skin colour, facial/body features to make them more like a particular race, ethnicity, or cultural group?
  • Am I dressing up as a culture or borrowing from a religion that is not my own or is not part of my background?
  • Do I understand and respect the history or tradition of the culture that I am borrowing my costume from?

Hallowe’en Candy and Treats

A reminder that we encourage our students to celebrate the spirit and fun of Halloween, however we cannot accept any food or candy items at school. Thank you for your understanding.

Costume considerations to be safe at school:

Costumes must not:

– Impair vision or breathing, there are no costume masks to be brought to school as students will be wearing masks for COVID-19 protocol;

– Present a trip hazard to the wearer or the bystander;

– Represent disfiguring injury or, to put it bluntly, “blood and guts”;

– Promote themes or activities inappropriate for a Catholic elementary school;

– Be revealing or suggestive;

– Include weapons or replica weapons;

– Require staff to apply or remove costume pieces and/or make-up

Costumes must:

– Allow the student easy, independent access to the washroom. This is especially important for students from FDK to grade 2.

– Allow the student to wear sufficiently warm clothing over or under the costume as weather/temperature dictates for outdoor recess.
