Weekly Update #3

Don’t worry about anything, instead pray for everything. Philippians 4: 6

A Big Thank You!

A big thank you to our parents, students and staff for working together to ensure a safe start to our school year.  We appreciate your patience with our school procedures.

Medical Perils:

Please ensure you have returned the necessary forms for any medical perils (anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, etc.) to the office along with any medication needed so we can update our files. A reminder that Lumen Christi strives to be a NUT FREE environment. We have students with life threatening allergies to nuts and other allergens. No peanut butter or other nut products are allowed. Please check labels before sending items in school lunches and for snacks. Even a trace of nut oil from one child’s fingers to a desk surface can cause a deadly reaction. Please note that Wow Butter (soy product) is not allowed as well since we cannot distinguish between it and peanut butter.

If a child experiences symptoms at school:

Please be advised, under the Direction of Halton Region Public Health, if your child and/or an individual living in your household has acknowledged that they are experiencing at least one (1) COVID-19 symptom:

  • Fever and/or chills
Temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius/100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher

  • Cough or barking cough (croup)
Continuous, more than usual, making a whistling noise when breathing (not related to asthma, post-infectious reactive airways, or other known causes or conditions you already have)
  • Shortness of breath
Out of breath, unable to breathe deeply (not related to asthma or other known causes or conditions you already have)

  • Decrease or loss of taste or smell
Not related to seasonal allergies, neurological disorders, or other known causes or conditions you already have

  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea
Not related to irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, menstrual cramps, or other known causes or conditions you already have

What should you do next?

Seek medical advice for your child, and have your child tested for COVID-19 as appropriate or advised by your health care provider.

Your child must stay home and not leave except to get tested or for a medical emergency.

Siblings or other people in the home who are fully vaccinated do not need to isolate and can leave the home.

Siblings or other people in the home who are not fully vaccinated must stay home until your child:

  • tests negative for COVID-19; OR
  • are cleared by your local public health unit; OR
  • are diagnosed with another illness

When can your child(ren) return to school?

If your child gets tested for COVID-19 and tests NEGATIVE:

Your child can return to school/childcare when ALL the following apply:

  • they do not have a fever (without using medication)
  • it has been at least 24 hours since the symptoms started improving (or 48 hours if they have had nausea/vomiting/diarrhea)
  • they were not in close physical contact with someone who currently has COVID-19
  • If your child gets tested for COVID-19 and tests POSITIVE:
  • Your child can return to school/childcare only when cleared by Halton Region Public Health

If your child does not get tested for COVID-19:

Your child must isolate for 10 days. They may be able to return earlier if ALL the following apply:

  • a doctor diagnosed them with another illness
  • they do not have a fever (without using medication)
  • it has been at least 24 hours since their symptoms started improving (or 48 hours if they had nausea/vomiting/diarrhea)

If you do not seek medical advice:

Your child must isolate for 10 days. They may be able to return earlier if ALL the following apply:

  • they do not have a fever (without using medication)
  • it has been at least 24 hours since their symptoms started improving (or 48 hours if they had nausea/vomiting/diarrhea)

Though we love our four-legged friends, some of our children have severe allergies and are frightened by an encounter with a dog. Our school board prohibits dogs on school property for the protection of your children as well as for the protection of your pet.

Please be advised that from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm our students may be out and about with YMCA and after-school activities in the yard, so we ask your cooperation in not walking your dog through the property during these hours.

The staff of Lumen Christi will be reaching out to parents. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher an appointment is necessary. The classroom teachers’ first responsibility is the teaching of the children during the regular school hours. Please leave a voice mail message for your child’s teacher and they will return your call in a timely manner ~ within 48 hours.

If you have a concern regarding your child, the first call needs to be directed to the classroom teacher.

Rowan’s Law Day:

In March of 2018, the Ontario government passed a law known as Rowan’s Law. Designed to protect amateur athletes, including students, and educate parents/guardians, coaches, teachers, and officials about the dangers of head injuries, it is the first law of its kind in Canada and will benefit both athletes and non-athletes.

Rowan’s Law is also about education. By increasing concussion awareness and knowledge, we can change Ontario’s culture around sports, physical activity, and injury.  Rowan’s Law will make it easier for those who experience concussions to SPEAK UP, get the help they need, and take the time necessary for recovery, with the support of everyone around them. Rowan’s Law Day is on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Orange Shirt Day:

In honour of the Halton Catholic District School Board’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, Orange Shirt Day will be observed on September 30, 2021.  Orange shirt day is an annual event that started in 2013 to recognize the legacy of Residential school system for First Nations, Metis and Inuit families and communities. It is a show of support and understanding of the history of the school system that impacts many First Nations, Metis and Inuit people today. Please wear an Orange Shirt or Orange clothing in Support of our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, September 30, 2020.

Family Paint Night in Recognition of Orange Shirt Day:

HCDSB families, students and staff are invited to participate in a virtual family paint night in recognition of Orange Shirt Day.

Save the Date: Lumen Christi Virtual Open House

In the past, the Lumen Christi community has enjoyed hosting a Community Building Event and has enjoyed hosting an Open House on Curriculum Night where students can take their parents on a tour of their classrooms and share their learning routines. It saddens us that we cannot have parents and guardians in the school to show you all the wonderful things happening in our classrooms.

This year, we will host a “Virtual Open House”. Presentations will be shared on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. More information will be shared in the upcoming weeks. Our classroom teachers have been busy creating presentations to showcase their classrooms and share their learning routines and programming information with you.

The evening will begin with a prayer and welcome by Mr. Jurus and Mrs. Melchionna.

We look forward to sharing this information with you.

Emergency Drills:

This week we conducted a practice fire drill. Throughout the fall, we will conduct a series of drills to ensure everyone knows how to respond in the case of an emergency. Procedures for conducting fire drills align with physical distancing guidance provided by Public Health.  Emergency evacuation procedures were conducted while maintaining physical distancing.

Gentle Reminders:

  • Only one parent or guardian will be permitted on school property to drop off and pick up children.
  • Parents and guardians will remain outside and will not be permitted to enter the school (unless there is an extenuating need, and prior approval has been obtained as per the Visitor Protocol).
  • Supervision begins at 8:05 a.m. Students enter the playground and go directly to their line
  • Kindergarten students will enter the school immediately upon arrival in the morning.
  • Parents and caregivers are asked to leave the school property as soon as they drop off their child(ren). No gathering or congregating will be allowed on school property.
  • Kiss and Ride – Parents should stay in their vehicle.  Staff members are stationed to help guide your children onto the sidewalk if they require assistance.
  • Kindly walk bikes and scooters when on school property.
