Parent Weekly Update January 20-24th

Thank you to our Gr. 7s for leading us in our monthly virtue assembly on Courage and reflections on the Holocaust memorial.  Congratulations to our Junior Volleyball teams on their participation in tournaments this week.  Thank you to our coaches, and especially Mr. Rosa and Mrs. DeRosa, for organizing the tournament held at Lumen Christi.

Reminders & Information:

  • Labour Negotiations Update: Our school will be CLOSED to students on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 as a result of the recent announcement by OECTA of a province-wide, one-day full withdrawal of services.Although classes will be cancelled on Tuesday, January 21stour school office will remain open for Advanced Kindergarten Registration on January 21st.

Please note that there may be picket lines present at our school location, which may impact traffic flow and cause potential minor delays in our school parking lot.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. For more information, please visit the Halton Catholic District School Board’s website: Labour Negotiations Update.

  • Term 2 Pizza Orders: Term 2 Pizza Orders are now available on School Cash Online.  Term 2 pizza runs from March 5th to June 25th.  Orders are due by Friday, February 28th.
  • Kiss & Ride/ Bus Lanes: We have noticed and appreciated that families dropping students off at the front of the school are not using the bus lane.  This makes bus drop off and pick up much smoother.  A reminder we do have a bus that picks up students after our entry bell to take them to another school site.  Your continued efforts are appreciated.  A reminder that our Kiss & Ride lane beside the kindergarten yard is intended for parents only to let students out at the sidewalk.  If you would like to walk your child to the gate please park your vehicle in the parking lot.  Please do not leave a parked car in the kiss and ride lane as this blocks traffic.  Thank you for your support.
  • Cookie Sales: On Friday, January 24th Terra Cotta cookies will be available first come, first serve for $1 (exact change only).  Cookies will be sold in the main foyer over lunch recess, 11:25-12:25.  Student members of FIAT will visit kindergarten classes to sell cookies just before lunch.  If we sell out of cookies we will be doing a special cookie sale in February.
  • MP Adam van Koeverden: On Friday, January 17th our grades 4-8 students had the opportunity to hear MP Adam van Koeverden speak and to ask questions.  This was an engaging session for our students to get to know more about our local representative in the federal government.  Please see information about two upcoming events Adam van Koeverden is hosting.
  • PA Day January 31st: A reminder that Friday, January 31st is a PA Day and there is no school on that day.

      • Team Canada Spirit Day: On Thursday, January 30th staff and students are encouraged to wear red and white in recognition of Team Canada.  Fun, outdoor winter activities will happen during recess led by PALS student leaders. *Note: this is a non-uniform day
    • Parent Tip: How to talk with your child when you feel concerned that they may be struggling with a mental health concern: It can be challenging to talk about mental health.  Sometimes parents, like others, avoid the conversations because they don’t know how to start or they worry that they might put thoughts into their child’s head that ad not been there, and will therefore, make things worse.  Research tells us this is not the case.  Bringing up worries, concerns, changes in behaviour with your child will open the lines of communication rather than worsen a situation.
Tips to help you talk to your child about mental health:

      • Find a quiet time when you are unlikely to have interruptions to begin the conversation.
      • Reassure your child that they can tell you anything and you will not get angry with them (even if you get scared).
      • Start the conversation with describing changes you have noticed in their mood/behaviour/reactions.
      • Share that you “wonder” about how your child might feeling, what they might be thinking what they might be worried about.
      • Allow your child time to reflect before they answer.
      • Stay calm.
      • If your child responds with “Nothing is wrong… leave me alone” don’t abandon the conversation.  Reassure your child you are there for them.  Give your child some time and try again.
      • If your child tells you anything that makes you worried reassure your child that you are glad they told you and you will help them find the right professional to talk to.
        Please see more information.
