Weekly Update September 6-10

Good afternoon families

A few important reminders as we prepare for our students return!

Daily Confirmation of COVID-19 Self-Screening
The Ministry of Education has directed all schools to implement daily confirmation of COVID self-screening for all elementary students attending school in person.

Parents and guardians are asked to complete the COVID-19 School Screening Tool for each child every day before leaving home for school.

Confirmation of the daily screening must be provided to the classroom teacher before school in one of the following formats:

  • Email results to Homeroom teacher – teacher emails are listed on our school website
  • Show “pass” confirmation on a personal device;
  • Show printed copy of the screening tool indicating the current date and a “pass”
  • Print of and Complete Confirmation of Daily COVID-19 Student Screening Log, which your child brings back and forth to school each day.

Staggered Entry for Students Grade 1-8

To support a safe return for our students the board has communicated a staggered start for students. The following will apply for all elementary students:

  • Tuesday, September 7th – Only students in Grade 1-8 with surnames beginning with the letters A-K will come to school.

First Day Procedures

Students will meet their assigned teacher outside on the black top – please note our Gr. 1 to 3 students will meet their teacher on the north play area (in front of the kindergarten play yard) and our Gr. 4 to 8 students will meet their teacher on the south side. In the event of inclement weather students will walk directly into the school and straight to their class. Staff will support all students entering the school and ensure your child makes it to their homeroom.

Holy Cross School Schedule

  • 8:30 – School day starts

Parking Lot/Busses/End of the Day Dismissal

Student safety is our top priority! We are asking families that use our Kiss & Ride to please avoid pulling up to the front of the school as this is our bus loop. Holy Cross has 4 large busses this year – Bus Zone and Kiss & Ride areas are clearly marked.  Please be patient, no vehicle should ever pass a parked bus.

Parents /Guardians, we ask that you please do not enter the school yard before/after school. This will help us ensure the safety of our students, please remember you are not a stranger to your child, you are too many others. Student walkers/Kiss & Ride students will be guided out by the homeroom teacher at the end of the day to the sidewalk area.

Holy Cross Return to School Plan

Families are encouraged to please review our Return To School Plan. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to connect with either your child’s homeroom teacher or Mr. Cacciola.

Medical

If your child has a medical condition, the existing Student Plan of Care should have been sent home at the end of June for you to review and update. Families can drop off all medical perils at the school this week with the updated Plan of Care. Families are reminded to please send a 2nd epi-pen with their child to give to the homeroom teacher. Please ensure that the epi-pen is labelled clearly with your child’s name. If your child has had a change in their condition over the summer, please inform the school prior to students returning.

Kindergarten Orientation Meetings

Parents of children attending Kindergarten (Year 1 and 2) will receive communication directly from their assigned Kindergarten Team. We will be staggering the entry process for all Kindergarten students. Year 1 and new Year 2 student orientations will take place on Tuesday, September 7th, and Wednesday, September 8th. Year 2 students will begin on Thursday, September 9th. Year 1 staggered entry will take place on Thursday, September 9th, and Friday, September 10th, and will be further communicated to parents by the Kindergarten educator team. All Kindergarten students will begin instruction with their full class on Monday, September 13, 2021.

Holy Cross Catholic School Council

If you are interested in joining our Catholic School Council please complete the nomination form and email it directly to Mr. Cacciola – cacciolaa@hcdsb.org. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, September 17th at 4 pm.

Water Bottles

Students and staff are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to school. We have designated refilling stations in our school – unfortunately the use of water fountains will not be permitted.

Lunches

For the health and safety of our students and school community it is strongly recommended that all elementary students remain at school for the duration of the lunch period. Students will not be permitted to leave school property with friends. As we limit visitors to our school throughout the day, daily lunch drop offs are not encouraged. However, should your child forget their lunch at home, please call the school to arrange a time to drop it off.

If there are any questions or concerns, please contact our main office. We look forward to welcoming all our students back this week!
