Please remember in your prayers our Grade 7 Confirmandi who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Parish.  May the outpouring of the Holy Spirit during this sacrament of initiation bring all of our grade 7s into a deeper communion with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Catholic School Council Meeting on Tuesday evening

Please note that our next Catholic School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 11th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons.  All parents are welcome to attend.

Holy Cross welcomes Freeze DNA

This Thursday, Grades 2-5 students will have a special presentation from Freeze DNA Book Publishing.  With their line of “Learn to Draw Comic Art” products, the Freeze DNA team tours across Canada to schools, libraries, and events teaching children about a style of drawing called “Comic Art”. Their aim is to bridge literacy and art, and to provide an opportunity for children to channel their creativity into an impressive finished product.  We look forward to exploring this creative outlet together!  Special thanks to Ms. Sims, our wonderful Library Tech, for seeking interesting opportunities, as well as great reading material, for our children.

Next Grade 8 Fundraiser: Kernels Popcorn

Take a break from packing one snack per week! Every Friday, from February 21st until April 24th, Grade 8 classes will be running popcorn sales.  The proceeds will directly support the Grade 8 students who are seeking to offset the costs of their Ottawa trip.

Please place your order through the School Cash-on-line system.  The link will be sent out this week in preparation for our February 21st launch.  Your support of our graduating class is most appreciated!

Valentine’s SPIRIT Day

This Thursday, February 13th, students are invited to celebrate Valentine’s Day by wearing Pink Red and White – no pajamas, please.   We kindly ask parents not to send in any food treats for Valentine’s Day as we have many children with anaphylactic allergies.  The gift of friendship and love can be shown through cards and non-food thoughts.

Special thanks to Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Jeffries who very kindly organized the Valentine’s for Vets initiative at Holy Cross this year.  They gathered Valentine cards created by our classes to send to Veterans throughout Canada.  Thank you to our Choir who, under the direction of Mrs. Cottrell, have prepared Valentine’s Cards for our senior neighbours at AMICA.

PA Day & Family Day

Friday, February 14th, is a Professional Development Day for school staff, focused on Equity and Inclusion.   Monday, February 17th, is Family Day. There is NO SCHOOL for students on BOTH days. We wish all our Holy Cross Families a wonderful Family Day weekend surrounded by loved ones.

Holy Cross Tips

Hold On To Your Kids – By Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D. and Gabor Maté, M.D.

Parents of Junior-Intermediate children may enjoy exploring one of the most disturbing trends of our time:  children today increasingly look to their peers for direction—their values, identity, and codes of behavior.  This “peer orientation” undermines family cohesion, interferes with healthy development, and fosters a hostile and sexualized youth culture.  Children end up becoming overly conformist, desensitized, and alienated; being “cool” matters more to them than anything else.

Hold On to Your Kids explains the causes of this crucial breakdown of parental influence—and demonstrates ways to “reattach” to sons and daughters, establish the proper hierarchy in the home, make kids feel safe and understood, and earn back your children’s loyalty and love.  By helping to reawaken parenting instincts innate to us all, this book will empower parents to be for their children what nature intended:  a true source of contact, security, and warmth.
