Keeping Our Community Safe

Currently, we are still planning a return to face-to-face learning on Monday, January 25th. Our educators are doing an excellent job teaching online, however, they are all anxious to get back into the classroom and we know our students are too!

The government is scheduled to make an announcement on Wednesday, January 20th. Should there be a change on the return to school, our school board will send out emails to keep everyone informed.

Please ensure to follow the mandated stay-at-home order and follow the direction of our Public Health Department. All of the measures will help keep us safe and hopefully enable us to get back into the building on schedule!

Student Absence Reporting

During this period of remote learning, we continue to promote regular attendance. Attendance is taken twice daily: once in the morning and again after lunch. If your child is not able to attend or participate in remote learning on any given day, please report his or her absence, as you typically would during in-person learning through the SchoolMessenger Safe Arrival System:  https://www.hcdsb.org/parents/report-your-childs-absence/.

We appreciate that all family situations are different and that some children will be unable to attend school synchronously on a predictable and consistent basis. Please let your child’s teacher know about your unique situation so that an alternate attendance plan can be arranged. We want to eliminate as much stress as possible for families and provide educational opportunities for students in a way that meets everyone’s needs.


Celebrating Black History and Culture

The Guardian Angels Equity and Inclusion Action Team needs your help! We are promoting family participation and involvement in supporting our Black History Month Initiative.

Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. The 2021 theme for Black History Month is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.”

If your family is interested in participating by sharing a family story, tradition, celebration, recipe, favourite storybook etc, we’d love you to let us know! Please let Mrs. Stephens know via email stephensk@hcdsb.org.


Remote Learning Code of Conduct

The students have made great strides in learning how to use our technology, and also in making sure that they are treating others with respect in our online Catholic community.

You can help by reviewing expectations with them using our code of conduct expectations and modeling positive online behaviours yourselves. For example, please remind your children that even private chats aren’t private in our online platforms, that our communications with one another should be appropriate at all times, and that no one should be taking or sharing pictures of the online class without permission.

As responsible, Catholic, digital citizens, students need to recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and in ways that are safe, legal, ethical and demonstrate our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

Students are required to demonstrate Catholic digital citizenship through the appropriate use of technology as outlined in our code of conduct. Our school’s Code of Conduct can be found in the front of our student agendas.

During this period of Distance Learning, there is an expectation that students continue to abide by Board and school Codes of Conduct. To ensure the safety and well-being of all students, please review these student expectations.

Students are expected to:

  • Treat other students and school staff with dignity, kindness, and respect.
  • Represent only themselves online. Students should never pretend to be someone else or allow someone else to pretend to be them.
  • Complete all work assigned to the best of their ability while adhering to rules around plagiarism.
  • Always protect their password(s) and schoolwork to protect their privacy and intellectual property.
  • Use appropriate and encouraging language when posting opinions, critiquing others and chatting on school platforms.
  • Immediately contact the teacher if they are having issues with class platforms (e.g., password no longer working, difficulty submitting work, concerns about how they are being treated, etc).
  • Notify their teacher should they feel their work has been compromised, copied or used without their permission.

Advanced Kindergarten Registrations for 2021-2022 School Year

To facilitate planning for the 2021-2022 school year, we encourage all families intending to register their children for Kindergarten to follow the guidelines posted on the front page of our website:https://elem.hcdsb.org/guardianangels/2021/01/update-advanced-kindergarten-registration/

Online registrations are now open. Document verification will take place when schools re-open for face-to-face learning. Our secretaries will be in touch with all new registrants to follow-up and arrange times for parents to bring verification documents to the school.

We look forward to welcoming our new kindergarten students and their families in the Fall 2021!


Teacher Absences

There may be times when your child’s teacher must be absent due to illness or other reasons. When this happens, we do our best to ensure a supply teacher is assigned to cover the class for the day.  Unfortunately, due to ongoing demands across our school district, supply teachers are not always available to cover every absence on any given day.

When a supply teacher is assigned, they will take attendance in the morning, and again after lunch, as per our usual practice. Your child will work on the asynchronous activities that have been posted in virtual classroom, and the supply teacher will be available to answer questions and support students through these activities.

If a supply teacher is not available, your child will work on the asynchronous activities posted in their virtual classroom.

Regardless of whether a supply teacher has been assigned to cover the classroom teacher’s absence, your child’s Core French/Social Studies/Arts class will proceed and the FSL/PTM/Arts teacher will be online to provide synchronous instruction, as scheduled.

We will communicate with parents and guardians when a classroom teacher is absent, and let you know if a supply teacher has been assigned.
