Grade 7 School-based Vaccine Clinics – Cancelled for 2019-2020 School Year

The Halton Region Public Health department has made the decision to CANCEL the third round of Grade 7 school-based vaccine clinics for the 2019-2020 school year, due to the school closures related to COVID-19. This round would have included the second and final doses for both the Hepatitis B and HPV 9 vaccines, offered to Grade 7 students who received the first doses of these vaccines in the fall of 2019. Halton Region Public Health will reschedule these clinics for the 2020-2021 school year and will let families know once the clinic rescheduled dates are finalized.

Parents and guardians can contact their healthcare providers directly if they wish to have their child receive this vaccine through their family doctor. Please report any vaccines your child receives outside of school by visiting: halton.ca/immunize or by calling 311.

Student Class Placement – September 2020 – Although it is only April, preparations are now being made to ensure that our school is organized for the 2020-2021 school year.  As such, in the coming months, teachers will be organizing student class placements.  As you can appreciate, many hours of meetings and consultations go into the class building process to ensure the appropriate placement of all students.  When building a class, teachers look at the following criteria;

  • Balance of ability – academic skills
  • Balance according to gender
  • Learning style – how the learner learns
  • Teaching style – how the teacher teaches
  • Social blending – who gets along with whom
  • Parental input – re: learning style of the student

Please note, that parental input is important to us and is weighed with other criteria.  Specific teacher requests cannot be considered.  Rather, if necessary, parental input, in the form of a letter/email to the Principal, Mrs. L. Cronin-Nowitsky (cronin-nowitskyl@hcdsb.org). This letter/email should focus on the learning style of the student and the type of environment the student best learns in.  Letters/emails should be submitted to Mrs. L. Cronin-Nowitsky by Friday, May 1st.  Please remember that many discussions and reflections are put into the class building process.  We will have approximately 400 students in September and we do our very best to develop classes that will be formed in order to maximize opportunities for each child to learn and be successful! Your trust in our professional judgment is greatly appreciated.

Promoting Well-Being:  Family Assets

Family Assets are the everyday things families do to be strong, even in challenging times. They are the actions we take to build healthy relationships and healthy family members. Whether you are a child, teen or parenting adult, everyone in the family plays a role in building these assets. Over the next couple of weeks we will be sharing how you can build assets in your home.

ESTABLISHING ROUTINES

Families are stronger when they share meals, traditions, and activities together, and when family members know they can depend on each other. Consider some of the following ways to establish routines in your home:

how you celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones in life. For some families, these may include religious or spiritual traditions such as worship, prayer, sacred readings, or music. Whatever the specific tradition, tell stories about its importance, history, and meaning—both across generations and for each member of your family.
